Xavier Irizarry stands on the cusp of what promises to be an exciting chapter in his life as he enters his senior year at Leesburg High School.

The young quarterback from Blake High School in Tampa, new to Leesburg but already a standout on the football field, embodies a blend of talent, leadership and dedication that sets him apart.

Xavier began playing football at age 8. Initially a wide receiver, he soon transitioned to quarterback, a move that sparked his passion for the game. Playing quarterback allows him to fully harness his athleticism and strategic mind.

“I love having the ball in my hands and being able to make plays,” says Xavier, the playmaker who thrives under pressure.

Football is not just a game to Xavier; it’s a reflection of the values and principles instilled in him by his parents. God and family are the most important things to him.

“My mom is my biggest critic, but she’s also like my best friend,” he shares. His parents, especially his mother, have been his steadfast supporters and role models, influencing both his personal and athletic development.

Xavier’s been part of the Leesburg High School football program for just a few months, but he’s already formed strong bonds with his teammates, particularly his offensive linemen.

“I love my offensive linemen and have gotten to know them well. We bonded instantly and it’s so important to have a close bond with those young men because they are who keep you safe,” he says.

Their camaraderie has been strengthened through college trips, where they’ve explored new programs and envisioned their futures beyond high school. “What I really loved was the Leesburg College Campus Tour. We got to bond, play together, but most importantly, as a senior, it allowed me to earn their respect,” Xavier says.

Xavier’s pre-game ritual includes listening to gospel music, which helps him stay calm and centered before the intensity of the game. “I believe in keeping my emotions calm before the rowdiness of taking the field. I have always done that. Some guys listen to rap, metal and other stuff, but for me, gospel music is what gets me in the zone,” Xavier explains.

His approach reflects his faith as well as a mindset that allows him to remain focused and composed under pressure.

Xavier is known for his ability to move around in the pocket and make plays. Agility and quick thinking have earned him the respect of his coaches and teammates.

“I consider myself a field general,” he says. His quarterback coach, Max Tucker, echoes this sentiment. “His work ethic is unrivaled. He’s a straight-up baller and one of the best quarterbacks I’ve had the chance to work with,” Coach Tucker remarks.

Sounds like a description of Xavier’s favorite player. “Cam Newton, in his prime, was incredible. I feel players like Cam advanced the game of football at the quarterback position by leaps and bounds from what it was, and I just loved watching him play,” Xavier says.

Xavier’s leadership qualities, inherited from his mother, are evident both on and off the field.

“Football has given me a work ethic and shown me that if you work hard, good things will happen, but you have to be willing to put the work in,” he says. This philosophy extends beyond the field, driving him to excel in all areas of his life.

Academics are just as important as athletics to Xavier, who carries a 3.4 GPA. He prides himself on his dedication to his studies and understands that a strong academic foundation is crucial for his future.

Upon arriving at Leesburg High, Xavier found a very supportive environment to learn and play.  “The thing that impressed me most about Leesburg High School was the faculty and coaches, I just can’t tell you how blessed I am to play for this group. My goal is to inspire these young guys, too, so that they can push hard and achieve what they want to be in sports or life,” Xavier says.

Commitment to student success extends beyond athletics at Leesburg High. The school’s holistic approach to education, which supports students in pursuing college, military careers, or immediate employment after graduation, resonated with Xavier.

“Leesburg is a place that allows possibilities academically and athletically,” he says. “That kind of community support is important to me, and I see what is being built at this program.”

As Xavier prepares for his final high school football season, he does so with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. The skilled Yellow Jackets quarterback would like to play at the collegiate level.

Colleges would be wise to recruit the young man with a good head on his shoulders who knows what he wants, the kind of young man who you gain respect for because he backs up what he says he will do on the field.

This smart young football player with a cannon for an arm is full of potential. Watch him play and you’ll see for yourself.
