TAVARES, Fla. — Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is now accepting applications for The Cottages at Heritage Grove, the organization’s first age-qualified housing community in Tavares.

The Cottages at Heritage Grove is a 23-unit pocket neighborhood designed for adults age 55 and older. The community will feature cottage-style homes and townhomes, each approximately 730 square feet.

(No residents under the age of 18 are permitted in these homes. This community benefits those in Lake and Sumter Counties who are on fixed income and retired.)

To qualify, at least one applicant must be 55 or older. No residents under the age of 18 are permitted, and applicants must also meet the requirements of Habitat Lake-Sumter’s Home Ownership Program.

“This community benefits those in Lake and Sumter counties who are on a fixed income, retired, or looking to maintain affordable housing as senior citizens,” said Veronica Troxell, programs director at Habitat Lake-Sumter.

Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter hopes The Cottages at Heritage Grove will serve the area’s aging population by offering a safe, affordable option for residents to age in place.

Through its Home Ownership Program, Habitat Lake-Sumter partners with local families and individuals to help them achieve homeownership. Participants pay an affordable mortgage and invest “sweat equity” through volunteering on Habitat worksites or at Habitat ReStores.

Homeowners are also required to complete financial education courses, such as first-time homebuyer workshops, financial literacy training or credit counseling classes.

Applications are now open to residents of Lake and Sumter counties interested in the two-bedroom, one-bath homes.
