Rookie Teacher of the Year Trevor Misegades Turns Trade Skills Into Student Success

Advanced Manufacturing | Lake Technical College
At Lake Technical College, Trevor Misegades is helping students build more than skills. He’s helping them build a future.
Trevor, an advanced manufacturing instructor, didn’t originally plan to become a teacher. With a background in manufacturing and machining, his path into the classroom came naturally through mentoring others in the trade.
“Over time, that passion for sharing knowledge and developing new talent led me toward teaching,” Trevor says.
Now in his second year of teaching, Trevor works with postsecondary students who have made the decision to pursue a skilled trade and are focused on building a career.
“I chose to teach at the postsecondary level because it allows me to work with students who are ready to focus on building a career,” he says.
Inside his classroom, Trevor emphasizes hands-on learning in a setting that mirrors a real manufacturing environment. Students are encouraged to problem-solve, learn from mistakes and develop the kind of work ethic expected in the workforce.
“My classroom is designed to mirror an actual manufacturing workspace, so students are learning in the same conditions they’ll encounter on the job,” he says.
For Trevor, the most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grow in both confidence and ability.
“Many students come into the program unsure of themselves, but through hands-on experience and hard work, they begin to realize what they are capable of accomplishing,” he says.
That growth is what continues to motivate him, even during challenging moments.
“When students begin to understand the concepts, master new skills, or realize they are capable of more than they thought, it makes the challenges worthwhile,” he says.
Trevor hopes his students leave with more than technical knowledge. He wants them to carry confidence, pride in their work and a mindset focused on growth.
“I hope my students remember the importance of hard work, attention to detail, and taking pride in what they do,” he says.
His impact has not gone unnoticed. Trevor was recently named Lake County Rookie Teacher of the Year, an honor he says reflects not only his work, but the support of those around him.
“It’s rewarding to know that by showing up, working hard, and leading by example, I’ve been able to help instill that same work ethic in my students,” he says.
At the end of the day, Trevor says the greatest reward isn’t recognition. It’s seeing his students succeed.
“I have the opportunity in the classroom to help someone gain skills, confidence, and a path toward a successful career,” he says. “I believe in you, I’m proud of you, and I love you.”
