Community Rallies Behind Tavares Junior Lucy Deiches in Fight Against Rare Cancer

Lucy Deiches is a 16-year-old junior at Tavares High School. She’s known for her academic achievements and dreams of becoming an archaeologist. However, Lucy is facing a difficult fight after being diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of cancer involving a tumor in her spine.

Lucy is pursuing an International Baccalaureate diploma and ranks among the top students in her class. She has spent her high school years working toward a future filled with possibilities. Now, she and her family are preparing for a lengthy course of cancer treatment that could last up to a year.

The diagnosis has brought significant emotional and financial challenges for the family. Lucy’s mother, Olivia Williamson, is expected to step away from work to remain by her daughter’s side during treatment and hospital stays, resulting in a loss of income as the family navigates the months ahead.

Lucy is one of four children. One of her siblings has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that requires the assistance of a home nurse.

Despite the challenges, those close to Lucy say she remains in good spirits and is approaching her fight with the same determination she has demonstrated in the classroom.

Madysn Stesney, Tavares High School’s senior class president and Lucy’s best friend, says she hopes the community will come together to support her friend and her family.

“Lucy isn’t just a peer; she’s my best friend,” Madysn says. “She’s the brightest light in any room and the first person to put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Madysn says Lucy’s diagnosis has created an opportunity for students, families and community members to show their support during an especially difficult time.

“I believe now, more than ever, our community has a chance to come together to make her feel seen, loved, and supported,” Madysn says.

Lucy’s mother, Olivia, recently shared encouraging news.

“After 16 days inpatient, Lucy is resting and relaxing at home!” Olivia says. “She will be completing three to four week cycles where she is in the hospital every other week. We are excited to get to spend some time together as a family and be back in our own space for a little bit! Thank you so much for your continued support! We are forever grateful!”

Madysn says she is working with the school’s principal, Dr. Stacy Keaveny, to organize fundraising events in the near future. Flyers sharing Lucy’s story and information about ways to donate are also being circulated to help spread awareness.

A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Tonya O’Connor on behalf of Olivia is helping offset the family’s loss of income. Donations can be made through the family’s GoFundMe page.
