Tavares High School senior Jayden Morris-Wyley has balanced elite academics with steady growth in the pool. He’s become one of the standout student-athletes whose work ethic has left a lasting mark on the Tavares High swimming program.

Jayden carries a 4.93 GPA. He has received more than 66 college offers and accumulated over $22,000 in scholarships. A National Writing Competition semifinalist, he will graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma. He plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminology and political science, finish law school by age 22, practice law in a major city and eventually run for Congress.

Tavares High Swim Coach Brendan Curl says Jayden has been a solid contributor for three seasons and that his early graduation brings mixed emotions.

“Jayden has been a solid member of the team for the last 3 years,” Curl says. “I’m happy for him but I’m actually a little sad that he is graduating early because we won’t have him on the team next year. Jayden started without very much experience, and quickly progressed through his first year from being able to just complete a 50 into being able to swim a solid 200 at meets. Over the next two years he developed a passion for the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. His progression has inspired other members on the team to improve themselves as well. His presence and positive attitude are infectious and it’s been wonderful to have him on the team for the last 3 years.”

Coach Curl attributes Jayden’s dual success in the classroom and the pool to consistent effort and outlook.

“Jayden is a great student and athlete because of his work ethic and positive attitude,” Curl says. “I believe to be successful you need three key components, passion for what you’re doing, a little talent and a whole lot of hard work. Jayden has a fantastic work ethic and is passionate about swimming. He also displays talent at whatever he focused his mind on and these traits will no doubt help him to be successful in achieving his goals.”

Jayden began swimming as a freshman a few years ago under Curl. He was drawn to the sport by the calm of the water and the camaraderie of competition.

“I really enjoy the tranquility and ease swimming gives me,” he says. “I also enjoy the sportsmanship and support each team brings.”

With an exceptional 4.93 GPA, Jayden credits organization and rigor for keeping him among the top students in his class.

“The secret to my high GPA is honesty keeping track of my assignments and pushing myself to succeed in difficult classes,” Jayden says. “When you challenge yourself intellectually, you strengthen your mind.”

Jayden says the best advice he has received came from his mother: “Shoot for the moon, so if you don’t make it you’ll land on the stars.” It’s motivation that has fueled his drive for success.

Athletically, Jayden takes greatest pride in mastering the 500-yard freestyle.

“I am most proud of my ability to compete in and complete the 500 freestyle at every meet,” he says. “I am very proud of my ability to complete this event because during my freshman year season I could not even complete the 50 free. Now I do that times 10.”

When he’s not swimming, Jayden is active in the Mock Trial Club, which he started himself. The club simulates courtroom proceedings and teaches judicial rules and case-building. Sponsor Mrs. Trivino and officers Alexandra Olson, Autumn Wilburth and Diego Serrano-Diaz have helped the group gain traction.

“One of my role models is the previous swim captain Carter Giffing,” Jayden says. “He helped me grow in my faith as well as a swimmer. Another person I look up to is my friend Abdiel Hernández. He has inspired me to be the best man I could be. They are both truly people I admire through and through. Lastly I have to mention my family, they’ve helped me more than they know.”

Jayden also credits his best friend Brianna for much of his success.

“Brianna motivates me to do my very best; give my all in every situation,” he says. “Have a heart a fraction the size of hers. Grit my teeth half as hard as her, and persevere just like her.”

While Jayden competes in sports, his interest in law and political science took root after an experience of injustice around his 13th birthday.

“Around my 13th birthday I experienced true injustice for the first time,” Jayden says. “That moment gave birth to an incredible passion and determination I’ve decided to capitalize on. I want to be a positive change in the world, fight the inequalities many people experience today.”

His long-term goals include becoming a successful criminal defense attorney and seeking a congressional seat.

“The need for change is evident so I hope to fight inequality in the court and on the floor,” he says. “I would also love to travel all over the world with my best friends.”

One of his favorite quotes comes from the musical Hamilton and is about the many things he has yet to do.

Coaching Jayden has been a true highlight for Curl.

“It’s absolutely wonderful to coach him!” Curl says. “He listens well and has the ability to apply what you tell him. He has admirable focus and always strives to be a better version of himself. He looks for guidance and he motivates others. He is simply a fantastic student athlete to work with.”

Having coached for nearly three decades across multiple sports, Curl says watching Jayden develop has been especially rewarding.

“When you encounter someone like Jayden who has the desire and focus to test themselves and chase their potential it is extremely rewarding to watch that process and have a part in helping him to succeed,” Curl says. “It has been my absolute privilege to work with this young man over the last 3 years, observe his dedication and hard work and see how far he has progressed. I wish him the best of luck and know he will succeed in whatever path he endeavors to follow.”
