Health Pros: Dr. Nitza Alvarez
Cardiologist
For the past 8 years, Dr. Nitza Alvarez of Tri-County Heart Institute has taken heart health to heart. She’s proud to run the area’s only female owned cardiology office, and makes it her mission to raise awareness of the growing issue of female heart health. When she first entered the medical profession, she was shocked to find that everyone treated a woman’s heart just like it was a “tiny version of a man’s heart,” and it’s not. She has invested significant time and effort to raise awareness, educate, and inform the women of our community (and the men they love) to be more proactive when it comes to heart health.
What began as a passion project has turned into the start of a movement designed to open the eyes of women across the country to the health risks they’re unintentionally exposing themselves to. This passion has turned into Dr. Alvarez’s first book, Heels vs Ties: Living With Your #1 Threat. It provides a laywoman’s introduction to the causes, symptoms, and prevention options surrounding the leading cause of death for women in America. Her book is available on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes; visit HeelsVsTies.com.
Her work isn’t just limited to outreach and awareness. If you want to conduct a reputable clinical study which specifically looks at women’s heart health, researchers look no further than Dr Alvarez. In an effort to investigate the effectiveness of a natural cholesterol-lowering product, owners enrolled Alvarez to oversee the effort as it related specifically to the female members of the survey group.
Then there’s the innovative Cardiovascular Preventative Program that she has developed. It identifies personalized risk factors, conducts a detailed assessment of the heart and cardiovascular system, and is driven solely by individualized testing. The program also includes specific screening protocols for athletes or for individuals who wish to achieve their highest level of performance without jeopardizing their safety. Men and women over the age of 20 years old can benefit from this program. Prevention is the best intervention.
And, for those who want to connect with more people from the local community, Dr. Alvarez invites you to join her on the second Saturday of every month for “Walk With A Doc”. Each walk begins at 7:30am at Buffalo Crossings in The Villages® with a brief information session, followed by a warm-up and a walk-at-your-own-pace. See TC-Heart.com for more details.
