Cutting Edge Expertise Has Changed Cataract Surgery

Over the years, there have been remarkable ophthalmic medical advances that have provided patients the ability to maximize their visual outcomes.

Jeffrey D. Baumann, M.D. specializes in advanced technology cataract surgery and intraocular lens implants. He has had the pleasure to assist, witness and participate in many remarkable ophthalmic surgical improvements, including being the primary investigator in numerous national implant studies that have contributed to the medical advances that are offered today.

“We built the first surgical center dedicated to eyes in Central Florida. We took cataract surgery out of the hospitals and made it simpler and less expensive. Now most cataract surgeries are performed in surgical centers, not hospitals,” notes Dr. Baumann.

In the past, standard cataract surgery was performed by creating an incision with a blade. However, with today’s advances, surgeons can now offer Femto Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS). FLACS replaces many of the steps that require a blade and softens the cataract, allowing for smoother removal in some instances. A lens implant is placed in the eye, whether the surgery is performed by traditional blade or an assisted laser.

Ophthalmic lens implants have improved greatly over the years, giving the patient the ability to choose the best lens for daily activities and overall health of the eye.

“I placed the first multifocal lens implants in Central Florida back in the late 1990s. We’re now in the fifth generation of multifocal lenses and they have dramatically improved,” says Dr. Baumann. “Not every eye is the same and not every patient desires the same outcome. Today we can customize visual outcomes based off one’s preferred lifestyle and ocular health.”
