Communities Rally Behind Beloved Umpire Terry Vaughn After Devastating Stroke

Lake and Sumter Counties are coming together in a powerful show of support for one of their own: longtime baseball umpire Terry Vaughn, who is now fighting for his life following a series of debilitating strokes.
A few weeks ago, while doing what he loves most, officiating a local baseball game, Vaughn suffered a massive stroke on the field. Doctors soon discovered that he had suffered multiple strokes caused by a 100% blockage in his right cerebral artery and an 85% blockage in his left. With the threat of further damage looming, medical specialists have determined that Vaughn will need emergency brain bypass surgery to reroute blood flow and preserve his life.

(Terry “left” is a beloved member of the community and has impacted so many lives on and off the field.)
For decades, Terry Vaughn has been a familiar face on ballfields across Central Florida. Known for his professionalism, quiet strength, and deep love of the game, Vaughn has earned the respect of players, coaches, and is absolutely loved by everyone. But beyond the umpire gear, he is widely regarded as a mentor, father figure, and devoted friend, a man who always shows up for others, both in and out of uniform.
Now, those he’s touched are returning the favor.
“Terry has given his heart and soul to the game and to this community,” says Amy Miller. “He’s the guy who never asked for anything, who always went above and beyond. And now he needs us.”

(Terry has been a long time umpire in the area. He’s umpired for many youth players who have gone on to play in college and professionally.)
In the days following his diagnosis, community members have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover Terry’s mounting medical expenses, including the complex brain surgery, rehabilitation, and loss of income during what is expected to be a long and difficult recovery. The outpouring of support has been swift and heartfelt, with donations, prayers, and personal tributes flooding in from every corner of social media.
“Terry went into his surgery feeling deeply grateful, not just for the skilled hands of his doctors, but for the outpouring of support that has helped ease the weight. Because of you, he can focus fully on healing without the added burden of medical and living expenses,” says Amy.
While the financial burden is significant, organizers say no contribution is too small. Every dollar, every share on social media, and every encouraging message helps ease the strain on Vaughn’s family and allows them to focus entirely on his recovery.
“Terry always showed up for us, now it’s our turn to show up for him. Please keep Terry in your prayers as he recovers. He’s strong, hopeful, and surrounded by love.” says Amy.
If you have the ability to donate, the GoFundMe Link is here. If you don’t have the ability to donate a simple prayer or words of encouragement would go a long way for Terry which you can post below.
