Lady Lake Police Deparment to Host Free Shredding Event

LADY LAKE, Fla. – The Lady Lake Police Department, in partnership with American Legion Post 347, will host “Shred it and Forget it,” a free drive-through shredding event aimed at helping seniors avoid scams.

The event will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at American Legion Post 347, located at 699 W. Lady Lake Blvd. Community members are invited to bring up to two banker boxes of documents to be shredded at no cost.

“As part of our ongoing community outreach, we educate seniors about the importance of shredding unnecessary paperwork that might contain sensitive information,” said Lady Lake Police Chief Steve Hunt. “This is a great opportunity to safely dispose of these documents.”

“Shred it and Forget it” is made possible with support from the American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Riders and Sons of the American Legion.

Items that can be shredded include:

  • Clean paper, any color and size

  • Blueprints

  • Newspapers

  • Magazines

  • Brochures

  • Mail, including window envelopes

  • Photographs

  • File folders, any color (no need to remove staples, paper clips, rubber bands or small binder clips)

Items that cannot be shredded include:

  • Cardboard

  • Wet or moldy materials

  • Telephone books

  • Hardcover books

  • Plastic bags and packing materials

  • Computer discs, CDs or DVDs

  • Backup and VCR tapes

  • Transparencies

  • ID badges and driver’s licenses

  • Microfiche and microfilm

  • X-rays

  • Batteries

  • USB thumb drives

  • Computer parts

  • Printer and photocopier parts

  • Trash or hazardous materials

  • Biohazardous and medical waste, including needles and sharps

  • Metals, including binders and hanging folders with metal hangers

Kyle Coppola was born in Newton, Massachusetts and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communications from Curry College in 2016.
