Lady Lake Walmart Neighborhood Market Downsized To Save Historic Trees

Lady Lake, FL – There has been a revised site plan which has been submitted t othe town of Lady Lake for the new Walmart Neighborhood Market that will be built at the corner of Cherry Lake Road and County Road 466. The building got reduced in size from 60,724 square feet to 45,603 square feet in the latest proposal.

Residents and town officials were irate earlier this year when Walmart planned to bulldoze historic trees located at the site. Under the revised plan approved in July by Lady Lake Planning & Zoning Board, Walmart will only destry two of those trees. Walmart will also pay Town of Lady Lake $20,000 to provide new trees. Lady Lake is known as Tree City USA and has very much been against destruction of historic trees.

(Beautiful historic Florida Oak trees will still have to be cut down in order to build the Walmart Market however the plan is much less than what it would have been by over 15,000 square feet. Now only two Florida Oak trees will be killed.)

The new neighborhood market in Lady Lake will sit on about 12.5 acres within the boundaries of Hammock Oaks, a Kolter development. A second development, The Reserve at Hammock Oaks, abuts Hammock Oaks to the south.

To the delight of residents this is a much better plan overall. However with trees still being destroyed by developers the fight to save the historic Florida Oak trees is not over. This is a fight that will continue as developers continue to buy up land in Lake & Sumter County. For now this appears to be a small win for the town. What are your thoughts? We need to think more about things like this.. Not only just because they are historic. Its the heat generated by asphalt and roofs .. and keeping trees also helps with water saturation from rain. this is smart. I want to see more of it! Not only is it smart it’s pretty
