LEESBURG, Fla. (AP) — Leesburg has proposed a $7.5 million renovation plan for the athletic fields at Susan Street, marking a significant investment in the city’s sports infrastructure. The renovation aims to modernize the facilities and better serve the community’s growing needs for recreational spaces.

The plan calls for a stadium with a grandstand and turf surface, four grass rugby size multi-purpose fields and one soccer size multi-purpose field. A field house with concessions, restrooms and locker rooms would be constructed as would bleachers for the auxiliary fields. The plan calls for parking in the northeast corner of the project with an entrance to the complex off of U.S. Hwy. 27

The estimated cost of the complex would be $7.116 million. The entrance road would cost an additional $253,332. Property acquisition for the entrance remains to be determined.

The city would finance the project with $3 million of federal money from the American Rescue Plan, a Lake County Tourist Development Tax Grant of $1.996 million, a legislative priority grant of $750,000 and city funds from the fiscal year budget of $2.066 million.

“We’re are hoping to get it out to bid in the next 45-60 dayhs with a construction contract by the end of the year,” says Leesburg City Manager Al Minner.

The renovation will be a major boost for local sports programs, providing high-quality facilities for youth leagues, school teams, and community events.

The Susan Street fields are a popular destination for Leesburg residents, hosting a wide range of sports including soccer, baseball, and football. The planned upgrades are expected to draw even more users to the complex, promoting physical activity and community engagement.

This is a very exciting project that will certainly benefit a lot of people. Susan Street has such a long history and many of Lake County’s best student-athletes have grown up playing there. What a thrilling project that is in the works!
