Mount Dora Christian Academy Inaugurates Dr. Sam Smith As Eighth President
Mount Dora, FL – In a ceremony filled with tradition and anticipation, Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home (MDCA&CH) inaugurated Dr. Sam Smith as its eighth president on Friday, October 18, 2024. The event, marking a milestone in the institution’s 80-year history, brought together the community in celebration of new leadership and the promise of continued growth.
The inauguration commenced with a sense of grandeur as the Mount Dora Pipe Band led the processional. Dr. James Moore, MDCA&CH’s fifth president, who served from 1989 to 2019, carried the academic mace, followed by the executive leadership team and Board of Trustees Chairman John Starling. The symbolic transfer of leadership paid tribute to the Academy’s rich history while paving the way for a new era under Dr. Smith’s guidance.
Though Smith officially assumed his role on July 1, 2024, the inauguration provided a formal introduction of his leadership to the broader community. His inaugural address, titled “What If?” articulated his vision for the future of MDCA&CH, focusing on both optimism and challenge.
“I believe the greatest moments in history happened when individuals or groups came together and asked the same question of ‘What if?’” Smith remarked. “What if what we accomplish together creates world changers who impact our world through Christ? That is my goal, my aim, and my desire as president of Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home.”
Smith’s address also honored the institution’s founders, who, 80 years ago, laid the groundwork for a Christian school and children’s home in Central Florida. “Today, we are all benefiting from their vision and determination to dream about what could be,” Smith added.
The ceremony featured formal charges to Smith from representatives of various constituencies. Secondary principal Dr. Sara Hill encouraged him to maintain a focus on academic excellence and spiritual growth, while Vice President of Finance Charlie Marcussen urged him to lead with humility and vision. Junior Cassi Monn, representing the student body, called on Smith to guide them by example, and Board Chair John Starling officially conferred the presidency, challenging Smith to uphold the institution’s values and lead it into a bright future.
“We entrust you with the responsibility of leading this institution into its next chapter,” said Starling. “We are confident in your ability to remain faithful to its founding principles, build upon its legacy, and guide it toward continued success.”
In his response, Smith expressed his commitment to the Academy’s mission and its future. “Challenge accepted,” he said. “I will do my best, leaning into the strength that God provides, to fulfill and exceed your expectations. I accept these charges with the boldness of Philippians 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’”
One of the ceremony’s highlights was the launch of MDCA’s “80 Trees for 80 Years” initiative, symbolizing the institution’s deep roots and commitment to growth. Each class planted a tree around the campus, a living representation of the Academy’s legacy and ongoing development.
“These trees will serve as markers of your impact on our campus,” Smith told the students. “When you return in the future, you can reflect on how this institution shaped your life.”
As Dr. Smith embarks on his presidency, Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home is set to continue its mission of cultivating faith-driven world changers, grounded in Christian values and committed to service.
