MDCA’s Blake Banks Breaks Interception Record in Historic Senior Season

Blake Banks, a senior defensive back at Mount Dora Christian Academy, is having a season for the ages, and it’s one that will go down in the school’s history books. With eight interceptions this year, Blake has surpassed the previous all-time single-season interception record, set by former standout Isaiah Bryant, who now plays for the Navy.
With 41 tackles, eight interceptions, one caused fumble, and a fumble recovery this season, Blake has proven himself to be not just a playmaker but also a cornerstone of the MDCA defense. Over the course of his career, he’s accumulated 16 total interceptions, according to MaxPreps, and has become a leader on and off the field.

Blake’s journey to this record-breaking season began years ago when his father and older brother introduced him to football. His family’s influence continues to be a guiding force for him both as an athlete and as a person.
“My dad and brother have always been my biggest supporters and role models,” Blake says. “They taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, and that’s something I try to bring to the field every day.”
Off the field, Blake is known for his strong faith, living by the motto, “No Greater Love” from John 15:13, which he holds close to his heart. For Blake and so many at MDCA, the students are grateful to be able to attend a school where they can grow spiritually and focus on learning more about God.

Athletic Director Megan Ziegelhofer praised Blake for his leadership and impact on the MDCA football program, highlighting both his athletic ability and character.
“Blake is the epitome of what we want in a student-athlete,” Megan says. “He’s been with us since sixth grade and has grown into one of the most dedicated players we’ve ever had. He’s a captain who leads with integrity and accountability, and he’s just as committed to being a great person off the field as he is to being a great player on it.”
Megan who nicknamed Blake, “Pookie,” says that he’s earned the respect of his coaches and peers. He is often the first to offer assistance to teammates and the last to leave the field.

“We are truly lucky to have Blake in our program. He’s a top-tier athlete, but more importantly, he’s a remarkable individual,” Megan says.
MDCA has been nothing short of dominant this season, with Blake playing a central role. The team has racked up a 10-game winning streak, including seven shutouts, and outscored opponents 468 to 69 over the course of 11 games.
The team’s latest win, a victory over Eagle’s View for the second week in a row, secured their spot in the SSAA state quarterfinals. Head coach Kolby Tackett expressed his pride in the way the team handled the challenge.

“Playing the same team in back-to-back weeks is always tough, but our guys handled it with focus and maturity,” Coach Tackett says. “We made some smart adjustments on defense and executed well on offense. Blake and the entire defense played disciplined, smart football, and it was a huge step forward for our program.”
Now, MDCA’s focus shifts to their next matchup, a Friday night showdown against Aucilla Christian at home. With Blake leading the secondary and the team in high spirits, MDCA is poised to continue its strong run through the playoffs.

When asked about his goals beyond high school, Blake says he plans to study business in college, though his current focus remains on helping his team finish the season strong.
“I’m just trying to stay focused on the present and continue helping my teammates,” Blake says. “We’ve worked so hard to get here, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
