PETA Brings Vegan Ice Cream Giveaway to Mount Dora on Friday

PETA’s vegan ice cream truck will make a stop in Mount Dora on Friday as part of a nationwide campaign encouraging people to choose dairy-free desserts.

The animal rights organization’s well-known “I Scream” truck will offer free vegan ice cream at the intersection of North Donnelly Street and West Third Avenue beginning at 10:30 a.m., coinciding with the Florida Storytelling Festival taking place nearby. The Mount Dora event is one of several stops the mobile ice cream parlor is making across Florida this week.

According to PETA, the campaign is aimed at urging ice cream lovers to “keep families together” by choosing vegan alternatives instead of dairy products. The organization says more people are opting out of dairy due to concerns for animals, the environment, health reasons, or lactose intolerance, and that businesses offering vegan ice cream are seeing growing demand.

“Vegan ice cream is the kind treat because a cow’s milk is made for her calf, not for us,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s cool caravan is encouraging everyone to show compassion and choose only dairy-free delights that help keep all families together.”

PETA says cows form social bonds and experience distress when separated from their calves, but that in the dairy industry, calves are removed from their mothers shortly after birth so the milk can be sold for human consumption. The organization notes that male calves are typically killed for veal, while female calves are raised to replace their mothers in milk production.

The organization also points to the increasing availability of dairy-free ice cream options, including vegan products from brands such as Oatly, Breyer’s and Ben & Jerry’s. PETA offers a free vegan starter kit and resources for those interested in making the switch.
