Lake-Sumter State College announced that President Dr. Heather Bigard has resigned, effective immediately, citing personal reasons related to her health and family. The resignation comes following a period of paid leave, which began on August 22, amid an alleged investigation. The college has not provided further details on the investigation at this time.

“I have truly enjoyed working with our talented faculty and staff, and most of all, our students,” Dr. Bigard said in her resignation statement.

Dr. Bigard, who became Lake-Sumter State College’s first female president in July 2022, has had a 25-year career in higher education, previously serving as the college’s Provost and Executive Vice President. She is credited with starting the Lake Hawk Leadership Academy and fostering partnerships with the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network to promote leadership opportunities for women.

Reflecting on her role, Dr. Bigard has been an advocate for women in leadership, saying, “My advice to other women is: Yes you can—and that’s the answer to anything that gets in your way. Believe in yourself and be willing to lean on those around you who want you to be successful.” She added, “Being the first female president means I am helping others have a pathway to achieve their dreams.”

Bret Jones, Chair of the District Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude for Dr. Bigard’s service and reaffirmed the college’s commitment to its mission. “We remain committed to our mission of providing an excellent educational opportunity to students in Lake and Sumter Counties,” he says.

The District Board of Trustees will convene for a scheduled meeting on Friday to appoint an interim president.

Lake-Sumter State College, founded in 1962, serves more than 8,600 students annually across its four locations in Leesburg, Four Corners, South Lake (Clermont), and Sumterville, as well as online.

As an alum, former LSCC ambassador and former student newspaper editor, this news is disappointing but I’m grateful for Dr. Bigard’s service, support and achievements for the college and community and I wish her good health, happiness and success in the next chapter of her life.

Hopefully the college can now heal after years of toxicity. It didn’t need to come to this but some can’t handle power.

Good riddance! As a former LSSC employee, she was the reason so many of us left. She created such a hostile work environment.
