Sinkhole Confirmed on Empire Church Road; County Moves Forward With Repair Plan

Lake County officials have confirmed that a roadway depression discovered Feb. 2 on Empire Church Road in the Groveland area is a sinkhole and say plans are moving forward to repair the damage.

After the depression was identified, the county secured the area and hired Tierra, Inc., a geotechnical engineering firm, to evaluate the site and determine the cause. According to the completed evaluation, the depression has been confirmed as a sinkhole.

The report states that Central Florida has a moderate to high potential for sinkhole development because of underlying limestone geology. Over time, natural processes can create voids beneath the surface, leading to ground settlement.

“This has understandably been a frustrating situation for nearby residents,” says Leslie Campione, chairman of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. “Our priority from day one has been safety. Now that we have confirmation of the cause, we are focused on moving forward with a permanent repair solution as quickly and responsibly as possible.”

Engineers have developed a recommended repair plan to stabilize the area and rebuild the roadway safely. Lake County will now seek quotes from qualified vendors to complete the work. If approved, construction will begin as soon as possible.

County officials acknowledge the closure has disrupted daily routines, commutes and access for residents in the area. Crews will continue monitoring the site to ensure public safety while the repair process moves forward.

Additional updates, including anticipated construction timelines, will be shared once a contractor is selected.
