Tavares to Host Educational Water Day Event on Saturday
Spring is in the air, and on Saturday, April 27, the Utilities Department will host a Water Day Special Event in Wooton Park. Residents can see presentations about Water Conservation, Water Pollution Controls, Wastewater, and opportunities to recycle used Cooking Oil. The goals are to educate kids, parents, residents, homeowners, and businesses on reducing unnecessary water usage and explain stormwater system controls and drainage into lakes, wastewater processes, and effects on the community.
Water Wise: Preventing Illicit Discharges
Follow these tips to prevent illicit discharges:
• Rainwater carried through the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) discharges directly to streams and rivers, meaning anything entering a storm sewer will not be removed at a wastewater treatment plant. This pollution can harm local water quality, fish, and wildlife, drinking water intake, and recreation.
• Any unauthorized discharge not composed entirely of stormwater is prohibited and considered an illicit discharge. Follow these tips to prevent illegal discharges:
• Never dump vehicle fluids, grass clippings, leaves, household chemicals, paint, animal waste, car washing soaps, litter, fats, oils, and grease into storm drains.
• Do not connect sanitary, restaurant waste, or industrial wastewater lines to the storm sewer system.
• Only uncontaminated water sources can enter a storm sewer: water used for firefighting, fire hydrant, and water line flushing; lawn watering; groundwater; and HVAC condensate.
If you discover an illicit discharge, please report it to the Stormwater Department at 352-742-6240
