Youth Soccer Coach Fighting for Life with Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis

A Mount Dora youth soccer coach who underwent emergency brain surgery last year is facing a renewed and more difficult fight after doctors confirmed his cancer has spread.

Corey Brooks, a longtime coach with the city of Mount Dora and a father of two, was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma after a severe headache led doctors to discover a large brain tumor. He underwent emergency surgery to remove the mass, a procedure his family described as lifesaving.

Months later, his wife, Kaila Brooks, shared that the initial recovery was short-lived.

“As most of you know Corey was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma and bravely underwent brain surgery last May, an incredible feat just eight months ago,” she wrote on Facebook. “Though the road to recovery was short-lived, we remain steadfast in our optimism.”

Over the past month, Corey has experienced worsening symptoms, including intense headaches, neck and back pain and vomiting. After multiple doctor visits and emergency room trips, the family received devastating news. The cancer has returned and spread to his brain and spinal fluid.

“While surgery may not be an option this time, our hope and determination remain unwavering,” Kaila says.

In recent days, Corey’s condition has declined further, prompting emergency room visits and eventually ended up at Moffitt Cancer Center. Kaila said doctors have struggled to maintain his blood pressure, and Corey has shown signs of confusion and disorientation.

“It is exceedingly difficult for me and the kids to see him like this,” she wrote.

Kaila described the emotional toll the ongoing medical crisis has taken on their family, recounting years of shared memories and the reality of living with a life-threatening illness.

“I can’t believe it’s been 21 years since you asked me out,” she wrote. “The hospital visits and long stays. The endless bloodwork, CT scans, MRIs, lumbar punctures. Cancer is terrifying.”

She added, “Watching the person I love go through the worst thing imaginable is absolutely heartbreaking. Loving you through this is both the hardest and most important thing I’ve ever done.”

Corey, who was the family’s primary provider, is now unable to work, leaving the family under continued financial strain. A GoFundMe campaign and meal train remains active to help with medical costs and living expenses.

“We’re still struggling financially,” Kaila said. “I can’t thank everybody enough who has donated or helped us. It’s appreciated more than you all know.”

The family is currently receiving care at Moffitt Cancer Center, where Corey is undergoing further testing, including a biopsy of a tumor in his abdomen and pelvis. He is also preparing for targeted radiation therapy following port placement and radiation simulation.

“Tomorrow marks the beginning of our next chapter,” Kaila wrote. “I need you to keep fighting. We need you to keep fighting.”

The Mount Dora community continues to rally around the Brooks family with prayers, messages of encouragement and financial support as Corey faces the next phase of his cancer battle.

Updates on his condition and recovery will continue to be shared by the family.
