40 Over 40: Beth Merrick of Sunshine Book Co.

Books have become one of the ways Beth Merrick connects with the community she serves.
The 55-year-old entrepreneur owns and operates Sunshine Book Co., where she is involved in all aspects of the business, including inventory, stock, event planning, social media, communications and accounting.
“The aspect I am most passionate about is the opportunity to serve our community through connection,” Beth says.
That community focus extends beyond selling books. Through Sunshine Book Co., Beth says the business frequently provides donations and discounts to local schools and organizations, coordinates author visits and field trips and has secured books for nonprofits at negotiated prices with publishers. The bookstore also maintains a Little Free Library on site.
Beth says one of her proudest accomplishments has been helping start the business and seeing its success and growth for more than five years.
Her involvement in the community also includes serving as an ambassador with the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Women’s Giving Alliance, serves on a leadership board at Lake-Sumter State College and on the board of Clermont Main Street. She frequently volunteers with Thrive Clermont and has previously served with Girl Scouts, the CRA board, church, Boys and Girls Club, PTO, SAC, Alpha Chi Omega and other events and organizations.
“We thrive by finding ways to connect and drive impact!” Beth says.
Before becoming a business owner, Beth spent many years working for Disney, an experience she says continues to influence the way she approaches leadership and customer service.
“I definitely lead with the philosophy of servant leadership,” she says. “My career with Disney has influenced me in many ways including leadership, guest service, showmanship, integrity, and an inclusive approach to our business.”
Her connection to books, however, began much earlier.
“At the core, my mom instilled a love of reading right from the start!” Beth says.
That combination of reading, service and community connection continues to guide her work with Sunshine Book Co. and her involvement throughout the South Lake area.
Her advice to future professionals and community leaders reflects that same approach.
“Approach your dreams with a growth mindset,” Beth says. “What you consume (books, media, etc) and how you spend your time are critical.”
