The state of Florida mourns the loss of Senator Geraldine Thompson, a trailblazing leader, educator, and champion for justice, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family following complications from knee replacement surgery.

A dedicated public servant and advocate, Senator Thompson’s career was defined by her unwavering commitment to civil rights, education, and healthcare. Her passion for justice led to landmark achievements, including her leadership in securing the exoneration of the Groveland Four, a decades-long fight to clear the names of four Black men wrongly accused in a racially charged 1949 case.

“It was important for me to be here because this is the beginning of a healing process,” Thompson once said at a public event honoring the victims’ families. Her efforts played a pivotal role in ensuring that Florida acknowledged the injustices of its past.

Beyond the political arena, Senator Thompson was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, shaping the lives of those around her with wisdom and compassion. Her work extended into cultural preservation as the founder of the Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture in Orlando, ensuring that future generations would understand and appreciate the rich history of the Black community in Florida.

Senator Thompson’s impact on education was profound. As a former teacher and administrator, she dedicated nearly 30 years to inspiring students and advocating for educational policies that uplifted underserved communities. She understood the importance of engaging young minds, often going beyond politics to speak directly with students about history, justice, and the power of civic engagement.

Her family has requested privacy as they mourn, but they deeply appreciate the outpouring of love and support from across the state. Funeral service details will be announced in the coming days.
