Wounded Iraq War Veteran to Receive Adaptive Motorcycle During VetFest 2025

Army Staff Sergeant Juan “Alejo” Amaris, a double amputee and combat-wounded veteran, will be honored on Saturday, May 17 as the 2025 recipient of a custom-adapted motorcycle through VetFest Lake County’s Harleys for Heroes Ride.
A retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, Amaris served 10 years and completed two tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2006. On July 20, 2006, while stationed in Mosul, Iraq, he was severely injured by an explosion during his second deployment. The attack caused bilateral upper extremity amputations, third-degree burns over 77% of his body, and calcification in both elbows.
Born on November 19, 1981, and originally from Pompano, Florida, Amaris has persevered through significant challenges. He was selected by the VetFest Lake County board to receive this year’s adaptive motorcycle as a tribute to his service and resilience.
The motorcycle presentation will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Gator Harley-Davidson in Leesburg, the final stop of the Harleys for Heroes Ride.
The VetFest 2025 ride begins at AMVETS Post 1992 in Mount Dora, with registration from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. and kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. The ride, escorted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, will travel through Lake County and conclude at Gator Harley-Davidson.
The cost to participate is $10 per person in advance or $15 on the day of the event.
At Gator Harley-Davidson, attendees will enjoy a community celebration featuring live music, food trucks, vendors, a chance auction, full bar, and veteran outreach booths. The event brings together motorcycle enthusiasts, veteran supporters, and local residents for a day of appreciation and recognition.
The Harleys for Heroes program provides veterans with motorcycles adapted to their physical needs, offering mobility, freedom, and a renewed sense of independence. Past recipients have included combat veterans recognized for their bravery and dedication.
VetFest has grown into one of Lake County’s key annual veteran-focused events, offering meaningful recognition for those who have served and connecting them with the broader community.
All makes and models of motorcycles are welcome to join the ride. Community members are invited to attend the post-ride festivities, show support for local veterans, and participate in the day’s activities.
