KIND MELON
June is the perfect time of year to enjoy local melons. Fresh cantaloupe, watermelon and honeydew are just some of the Cucumis melo family that thrive on local farms. The sweet, fleshy fruit is full of natural hydration, low in sodium and saturated fat, and packed with fiber and vitamins A and C. The term “melon” can apply to both the plant and its fruit, and you can find them at local farmer’s markets or fruit stands all summer.

MAJOR NEWS
The Lake County Sherriff’s Office has promoted Capt. Christie Mysinger to the rank of Major, making her the first female in the agency’s history to hold this position. Mysinger has been a law enforcement pioneer since 1991 when she took an assignment with the Sumter County Sherriff’s Office as an undercover officer at a local school at just 19 years old. Congratulations Major Mysinger!

TRACES OF THE PAST
The legacy of the Timucua Native American tribe that lived in Florida and Georgia for thousands of years lives on through cultural preservation efforts here in Lake County. The Timucua tribe was the largest indigenous group in the region when Europeans arrived, with a population near 200,000. They spoke several dialects of the Timucua language and worshipped the sun, moon and other deities. Their diet included farmed crops, hunted game and fish. They lived in palm-frond huts or circular thatched houses and wore decorative clothing. The Timucua Trail is located in the Ocala National Forest.

'CART' BLANCHE
June 13 is National Golf Cart Day, which will surely be celebrated in The Villages, where an estimated 70,000-80,000 of these cost-cutting vehicles – many of them customized – buzz daily along streets and nearly 100 miles of golf cart paths on 57 golf courses. Many residents use them for errands, social outings and even parades. Homes often include special “golf car” garages in this uniquely mobile community. Electric models are becoming more popular, offering a quieter, eco-friendly way to navigate the many destinations.
