A day of leisure turned into a life-threatening emergency for Clermont resident Matt Barton on Saturday, May 3, when a diving accident in Lake Minnehaha left him unconscious underwater. Thanks to the swift actions of his fiancée, bystanders, and first responders, Barton survived and recently reunited with the team that helped save his life.

Barton was enjoying the lake with family and friends when he used a rope swing to dive into the water. He struck an object below the surface and lost consciousness, failing to resurface. His fiancée, Cristina, acted quickly, pulling him to a nearby boat.

Several nearby boaters, George Champagne, Zachary Hebert, Antonio Parrilla and Brogan Turner, immediately began administering CPR. Emergency crews from Clermont Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4350 and Lake County Fire Rescue responded quickly. By the time they arrived, Barton had regained a pulse.

Matt has dinner with the very people who saved his life. Matt is holding a trophy they gave to him called “Dive Champion – Winning Dive – The Helicopter Ride”.

Firefighters from both agencies worked seamlessly to stabilize Barton until he could be airlifted by the Orlando Health Air Care Team for further treatment.

Officials praised the collaboration, calling it a testament to the unity and purpose shared across departments and jurisdictions.

“That day reminded us who we are, not departments, not jurisdictions, just one brotherhood,” a spokesperson said. “When one of us goes down, we all step in.”

Days later, Barton shared a meal with the very individuals who helped save his life, expressing gratitude for their courage, fast response, and unwavering support.

The department even had a bit of fun with Matt giving him a trophy titled Dive Champion “Winning Dive – The Helicopter Ride”.

(Making light after a near tragic situation.)

We are so thankful Matt is ok. Amazing work by everyone who lended a hand. You are all heroes!
