First Academy-Leesburg to Present Classic Holiday Tale “The Other Wise Man”

First Academy-Leesburg is inviting the community to celebrate the holiday season with its upcoming theatrical production of “The Other Wise Man,” a Christmas story based on the 1895 book by Henry van Dyke and dramatized by Ruth Sergel in 1955. The performance will take place on Saturday, November 15  at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Leesburg, 220 N. 13th St. Tickets are available now at FADrama.com.

The story opens with the familiar tale of the Three Wise Men but introduces audiences to a fourth, fictional Magi named Artaban. After seeing the star of the Christ-child, Artaban sets out to follow it but misses his caravan when he stops to help someone in need. His journey becomes a lifelong quest to find the prophesied King — a path marked by sacrifice, compassion, and faith. Though Artaban believes he has missed his chance, he ultimately discovers that his life’s detours have led him to a greater understanding of service and grace.

Director Molly Ishmael said this year’s production is one of her personal favorites to bring to the stage.

“The Other Wise Man’ was adapted for stage in the 1950s, so it has that classic epic feeling that makes it really fun to produce,” she says. “There are beautiful fantasy style narrators woven in with real history and a beautiful Biblical message. Personally, it’s one of my all-time favorite plays.”

Molly said the play’s historical and creative depth make it an especially engaging production for audiences.

“The Magi were a real group of ancient Zoroastrian priests in Persia. They were known for their work in astronomy and medicine,” she says. “We get to be super creative interpreting the costumes, scenic design, and soundtrack for this play, and we’ve tried our best to create a magical feeling on stage. I encourage everyone to come see it—you will love this beautiful holiday tale with a lovely truthful message in the end!”

This year’s show also holds special meaning for the cast and crew, as it marks the final Christmas performance for the school’s senior theater students. Molly shared that she’ll be joining them on stage for the first time in her four years as theater director.

“They’ve asked me to act alongside them this time,” she says. “Usually I’m in the tech booth calling technical cues, but it’s so special to get to perform alongside my students for a change. I’m excited to play a small, humorous role of the lead actor’s mother.”

Seniors Ethan Rippy, Autumn Young, Trinity Baum and Alex Masterjohn will take the stage, while other seniors assist backstage. Assistant director Nathan Dobbs will also appear in the production as the father.

“The two of us are just having a ton of fun hamming up these roles!” Molly says. “So definitely come see the show—it should be a lot of fun to watch!”
