Bushnell Remembers Longtime Councilman Dale Swain and His Legacy of Service

The City of Bushnell is mourning the loss of longtime public servant and former Councilman Dale Swain.

Dale dedicated his life to public service and education, serving Sumter District Schools from 1968 to 2003. During that time, he also coached football at South Sumter High School from 1970 to 1975. He later served on the Withlacoochee Regional Water Supply Authority Board from 2006 to 2024 and was a member of the Bushnell City Council from 1988 to 2026.

In December 2025, Dale resigned from his position on the City Council. Although he hoped to continue serving for another four-year term, health challenges prevented him from doing so.

His leadership and steady commitment helped shape the City of Bushnell for the better. In recognition of his 35 years of service as a councilman, Dale was awarded the John Land Years of Service Award in June 2023. Last year, a Bushnell street was renamed in his honor — Dale Swain Street — a lasting tribute to his impact on the community.

The City of Bushnell shared a message on Facebook: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.”

Dale’s legacy of service and dedication to the community will continue to be felt for generations to come.
