Minneola Raises Massive American Flag Overlooking Florida Turnpike

The City of Minneola has raised a 130-foot American flag overlooking Florida’s Turnpike as part of efforts celebrating the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The flag is located on city property near Exit 278 in Minneola and overlooks the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike. According to city information, approximately 50,000 vehicles pass through the area each day and the flag can be seen from nearly a mile away.

The project was first presented to the Minneola City Council on Nov. 18, 2025, when Mark Johnson submitted a purchase request for a large flagpole to be installed at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
The installation includes a 130-foot flagpole flying a 30-by-60-foot American flag. The estimated project cost was approximately $135,000, including contingencies for soil testing and electrical work.

During council discussions, members debated visibility, ongoing maintenance costs and potential safety concerns associated with the flagpole’s proximity to the highway.
Council member Pamela Saunders raised concerns about possible safety hazards near the turnpike, while Johnson noted the location was selected to maximize visibility and avoid future obstructions.
The proposal ultimately passed in a 3-2 vote.
City officials say the flag will remain in place as part of Minneola’s recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
