Baseball Community Supports Local Coach After Tragic Loss of 4-Year-Old Daughter

The local baseball community is stepping in to support one of its own following a heartbreaking loss that has shaken families across the area.

Coach Mike Simmons, who helps lead Sorrento’s 13U Premier travel baseball team, is now facing the unimaginable after the death of his 4-year-old daughter, Kamaria Simmons, in a tragic accident earlier this week.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 7:15 pm on April 1 in a private driveway near Robinson Avenue and 13th Street in Apopka. Investigators say Kamaria was standing near the rear passenger side of an SUV when the vehicle, driven by the girl’s mother, moved forward. Kamaria fell and was struck. She was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Family members described Kamaria as loving and playful, and plans are underway for a vigil in her memory.

For those who know Mike, the loss is especially difficult. Fellow coaches and families say he has long been a steady presence in the Central Florida baseball scene, known for giving his time, mentoring young athletes and showing up whenever help was needed.

Now, those same families are finding ways to support him and his loved ones. A GoFundMe has been created to assist the family during this time, and messages of encouragement continue to circulate throughout local teams and leagues.

Many of the players Mike coaches today will go on to compete in Lake County high schools in the coming years, a reflection of the strong foundation he has helped build both on and off the field.
