Beacon College’s Intramural & Fitness Facility on Track to Open in August

Beacon College in Leesburg broke ground in late August 2025 on its 28,000-square-foot Intramural and Fitness Center. Construction is progressing with a scheduled opening for the Beacon community at the start of the fall semester in August.
The $11 million project was fully funded through fundraising as part of the college’s first capital campaign. “The Beacon Promise” campaign is on track to close June 30, meeting its overall goal of $14.5 million.

More than 70 percent of Beacon College students regularly participate in fitness, intramural, recreation and competitive athletic programs. For students with learning and attention issues, fitness routines, exercise and participation in group sports are critical for fostering self-confidence, focus, mental health, discipline and social development. Until now, Beacon students have relied on rented venues for games and matches, without a true home facility.
The new center will feature two university-regulation basketball courts, a one-tenth-mile running track, a fully equipped fitness center and multipurpose playing surfaces for basketball, volleyball and floor hockey. Removable bleacher seating will accommodate up to 250 spectators.

With space for up to 1,000 people, the facility will also serve as a gathering place for commencement, orientation, convocation, community-wide meetings and parents weekend. It will provide a multipurpose setting for many aspects of campus life. The facility will not be open to the general public.

“Beacon College is incredibly proud to represent Leesburg on the international stage,” Associate Vice President of Communications Darryl Owens says. “We must continue our efforts to provide a rigorous collegiate experience for students with learning and attention issues.”
This past year, Beacon was recognized by Forbes with inclusion on the Forbes Accessibility 100 list, honoring the world’s leading innovators and impact makers in accessibility for people with disabilities.
