A community shattered by loss will gather Monday evening to honor two South Lake teenagers, Jade and Jose, killed in a car crash over the weekend.

A candlelight vigil will take place at Lake Catherine Farms, 5849 Lake Catherine Road in Groveland, beginning at 5 p.m. The program is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Luminaries and battery lights will be provided, and those attending are asked to wear red in memory of Jose and pink in honor of Jade.

The gathering will bring together friends, classmates and families to share memories, comfort one another, and remember the lives of two young people described as bright, kind, and full of promise.

Seventeen-year-old Jose Ivan of Clermont and sixteen-year-old Jade were killed Saturday evening when their Toyota Scion collided with an SUV on State Road 33 west of Groveland, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Both teens were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 75-year-old driver of the SUV and three passengers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

In the days since, friends and community members have flooded social media with messages of grief and love.

“Jose was a bright, kind, and loving young man with his whole future ahead of him,” it read on the GoFundMe post. On Jade’s GoFundMe, it described her as “a beautiful light whose laughter and kindness touched everyone she met.”

Separate GoFundMe pages have been created to assist both families with funeral and memorial expenses.

Monday night’s vigil will serve as a time for reflection, remembrance and unity as South Lake residents come together to honor the teens’ lives and support their grieving families.
