Eustis Freshman Tyler Heine Leads Eustis Panthers Into District Playoffs

Freshman sensation Tyler Heine has been a spark plug for the Eustis Panthers this spring, helping steer the program to a 13-11 record as they prepare for the Class 4A District 7 Playoffs, which begin this week.

The class of 2029 freshman leads Eustis in batting average at .417, collecting 25 hits, driving in 11 runs and scoring 12 times while playing multiple positions, including infield, outfield and pitching.

Tyler has made an immediate impact in his first high school season and for Tyler, baseball is his passion.

“I started playing when I was 6 years old at Sorrento Babe Ruth, so I’ve been playing for 10 years,” Tyler says. “My dad and my very first coach, Skip Bushnell, really helped me get involved. I remember one spring in the office room in my house signing up for it and I’ve never looked back.”

Growing up, Tyler idolized former Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun, which inspired his jersey number 8. These days, he models his game after current Brewers infielder Bryce Turang.

While his game is modeled after Turang the most influential people in his life have been his father and coach. “Eustis head coach Tony Thomas and my dad are the most influential people. I really look up to them,” he says.

One early highlight of his career so far came against Lake Minneola earlier this season when the freshman went 3-for-3 in a game at the start of the season. That confidence helped shape his early season and has given way to a dominant year.

But Tyler’s favorite baseball memories extend beyond the diamond to travel ball trips to Cooperstown, Pigeon Forge and Shipyard, places where he fondly recalls hitting home runs and having a great time doing it.

Through it all, this determined young player has learned a key lessons during his short but so far dominant high school career.

“I’ve learned that hard work, dedication, and all the countless hours that you put in when no one or everyone is watching will always pay off,” Tyler says.

His father delivered what Tyler considers the most important advice he’s received from a coach: “This is a game of failure and no matter how hard you try, you will never be perfect; play your game to the best of your ability.”

That mindset has helped Tyler overcome his biggest challenge.

“My biggest challenge that I have had to overcome would be my size. I’ve never been the biggest guy on the field so I have had to work hard to develop my skills and my baseball IQ,” he explains.

But when you look at Tyler play you would never know that about him. He is so much more mature of a player than his age or size would suggest. He can change the game with one swing of the bat and that’s something he’s done all season long for the Panthers.

Tyler also offers advice to younger players: “You might not be the biggest, strongest, or fastest kid out there but natural talent can only take you so far; if you work at your craft you will stand out over them.”

When he’s not playing baseball, Tyler maintains a 4.5 GPA and stays active in his 4-H group, volunteering at Trout Lake Nature Preserve, the Zellwood Tractor Pull, Tavares Youth Baseball, Youth Eustis Baseball and neighborhood yard work. He also enjoys his 4-H photography project.

Tyler also previously played football and basketball but shifted all his focus to baseball in high school.

“Eustis High School has really helped me develop as a player and a person. We have a standard and if you aren’t mentally strong enough to play here you won’t,” Tyler says.

“What I enjoy most at Eustis is that I am in an environment where everyone has the same central goal, to get better and perform.”

Looking ahead, Tyler hopes to continue his baseball dream at the collegiate level while pursuing studies in engineering.

For now, Tyler and the Panthers turn their attention to the district playoffs, where his bat and work ethic will be key as Eustis aims to contend for a district championship. Eustis will play at Mount Dora in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 4pm.
