Eustis Sophomore Throws First Pitch After Surviving Near-Fatal Crash

The crowd at the Eustis High School baseball game on Friday night paused for a powerful moment when sophomore Wyatt Whetro stepped onto the field to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Months earlier, Wyatt had been fighting for his life.

In January, Wyatt was involved in a devastating car accident that left him with critical injuries, including a lacerated liver and kidney and a broken femur. According to a social media post, Wyatt initially was unresponsive at the scene before first responders were able to revive him.

The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of hospital stays and surgeries. Wyatt has undergone about 10 operations as doctors worked to stabilize his injuries and repair damage to his organs. At times, his condition required intensive care and his family faced an uncertain road as he battled through complications and infections.

After weeks of treatment and recovery, Wyatt was finally discharged from the hospital at the end of February. Though he continues to recover and still has medical appointments and possible procedures ahead, being back with his teammates meant everything.

Before the game, Wyatt took the mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch, a moment that brought cheers from the stands and emotion from the dugout. His teammates have dedicated their season to him, wearing bracelets throughout the year to honor his fight.

For the Eustis baseball community, seeing Wyatt back on the field was a powerful reminder of perseverance and the strength of a team rallying around one of its own.
