Lake County Animal Shelter Modifies Operations Due to Contagious Bacterial Infection
As a precautionary measure, the Lake County Animal Shelter (LCAS) is immediately suspending non-emergency dog admissions for a brief period of time after a dog tested positive for Streptococcus zooepidemicus, more commonly known as “Strep Zoo.”
Strep Zoo is a contagious bacterium that can lead to sudden death in canines. LCAS consulted with infectious disease experts on best practices for treatment, care, and preventive methods. LCAS staff members are following recommended treatment protocols for all dogs in the Shelter’s care.
Additionally, to minimize risk, LCAS will implement the following changes to canine operations:

The Wellness Program will utilize the facility’s drive-thru services.

Adoptions of recovered dogs will continue, while adoptions of at-risk or exposed -dogs will be suspended.

Dog-to-dog meet and greets are suspended until further notice.
Residents who find a dog are also encouraged to participate in the Finder Foster Program, which consists of attempting to locate the owner through established methods or temporarily fostering stray pets rather than bringing them directly to the shelter. This program will help reduce the risk of further spreading Strep Zoo.
Until further notice, the Shelter will only accept dogs in immediate need of care due to injury or illness. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Animal Enforcement team is available to assist with sick or injured dogs found in the community.
Residents are encouraged to donate canine enrichment items such as Nylabones, Kongs, peanut butter, and treats. Please drop off donated supplies at the front door of the facility.
