Leesburg High Softball Wins 38-21 Against Wildwood

“What did I just say? 38-21 in a softball game? Are you serious? Yes, I am serious, and Leesburg High just set a school record for the most amount of runs in a single game in school history. Fifty-nine total runs set between both schools is perhaps the largest single run total in Lake and Sumter County history. I can’t find a larger score in modern softball history in our county.

38-21. That is hard to put into perspective. This was an offensive slugfest from start to finish. Kudos to the batters for producing so much offense, but I am honestly not even sure if I have ever seen 59 runs scored in any stick and ball sport in my entire life.

Let’s go over some numbers on the season so far. Leesburg’s Addison Hunter is #1 in Class 5A in RBIs and #2 in Runs scored. She is the #2 player in Florida for runs scored and the #3 player in all of Florida for RBIs. Hunter has been a huge bright spot this year for Leesburg High. She is only a freshman which is even more impressive.

Meanwhile, Kennadi Williams, who is a junior, has scored 28 runs this year. She has 20 RBIs and 14 hits. Hannah Pavia and Hailey Thoothaker have also contributed heavily to the offense. These girls know how to hit a softball that is for sure. Now if the pitching can be refined a bit, the Yellow Jackets will find themselves in good shape.

Leesburg is 11-4 on the year. However, the Lady Yellow Jackets do rank #56 in Class 5A due to strength of schedule. Belleview is ranked as the #32 team, which means Leesburg is going to be in a tough situation come district time.

Due to the strength of scheduling, Leesburg will in theory have to win the district championship to make the FHSAA Playoffs. Springstead and Lecanto are ranked as the #15 and #25 teams in the district, so the path for Leesburg will not be easy.” It’s getting to be that time! Tournament season is almost upon us for both baseball and softball. Leesburg has a few more weeks to refine things before things really heat up.

May not be modern softball but in 1991 LHS softball won a game with a score of 70-7!
