Veins Expert

John D. Horowitz MD, FACS

Meet the Expert: John D. Horowitz MD, FACS, a board-certified vascular surgeon, has been practicing vascular surgery since 1993, dedicated to minimally invasive vein therapies. He is the founder of Central Florida Vein & Vascular Center with four locations, now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

What inspired you to focus on venous disease and start the practice 25 years ago?

A: As a vascular surgeon I have cared for patients with both arterial and venous disorders, but vein and arterial patients are two distinct patient populations with very different health problems and needs. As one of the only adopters of dedicated vein care in Central Florida, I have been able to create a practice where venous disease is the highest priority of care. Patients get the specialty attention they deserve from practitioners who are truly experts in the field, as opposed to a practice that mixes arterial and venous care.

What specific conditions bring patients to your practice and what sets CFVVC apart from other practices?

A: The most common reasons people present to us are visible varicose veins, spider veins, leg pain, heaviness, tiredness and swelling. As a comprehensive vein care center, in addition to routine vein problems we are equipped to help patients with more advanced, complex problems such as venous ulceration or skin breakdown, DVT or blood clots, restless legs syndrome, and lymphedema. Most other vein treatment practices do not care for the full spectrum of venous and lymphatic diseases, while our doctors have achieved board certification in their treatment. We focus solely on venous disorders to provide the most advanced, state-of-the-art care in a comfortable, patient-centered environment. This results in a higher level of care and better patient experience.

Is it normal to have leg pain and swelling or should this be a concern?

A: One of the most common misconceptions is that leg pain, aching, heaviness and tiredness are a normal part of aging. These symptoms may represent underlying venous insufficiency, the root cause of venous insufficiency or blood pooling in the legs. Untreated venous insufficiency is unhealthy and is always progressive over time, so early treatment is best. Venous ulceration or even blood clots can occur if untreated.

What can indicate early signs of venous disease?

A: The following symptoms are warnings that underlying elevated venous pressure may need attention:

  • Visible leg changes, such as varicose veins or spider veins
  • Swelling of the foot, ankle or calf

If you have these symptoms or other concerns, call today to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment.
