Local Heroes: Thomas and Lucy Kelly Rush to Aid Motorcyclist in Leesburg Crash

LEESBURG, Fla. — A Lady Lake woman is recovering after a serious motorcycle accident last week, thanks in part to the quick actions of a local couple.
Amber Kennedy who’s 25-years-old was riding her motorcycle home from Cosmera hair salon in Lady Lake when an SUV pulled out in front of her near Rural King on U.S. Highway 27/441. Despite her efforts to avoid the vehicle, she was thrown from her motorcycle, suffering a fractured right fibula, a fractured left clavicle and a severe wound to her right knee that required immediate surgery. She was airlifted to a trauma center, where she remains hospitalized.

(Amber Kennedy suffered severe injuries in the crash but survived thanks to the quick actions of everyday citizens.)
Thomas and Lucy Kelly residents of Leesburg, who had just pulled into the Rural King parking lot, witnessed the accident and immediately ran to help.
“We saw Amber going down Highway 27/441 and had just pulled into the parking lot when the accident happened,” Thomas Kelly said in a social media post.
The couple who have been married for over two decades immediately got out of their truck and rushed to Kelly’s side as she lay injured in the roadway.
Thomas initially ran over and held onto Amber’s head, repeatedly trying to keep her still before law enforcement and EMS arrived. Meanwhile, Lucy knelt beside Amber, holding her hand and offering words of comfort.”

(Thomas Kelly on the right and Lucy Kelly on the left are the ones who arrived on the scene first to help Amber Kennedy. Thomas is a retired firefighter of 20 years. Both are also avid motorcycle riders.)
A registered nurse, whose identity remains unknown, also stopped to assist. She took over stabilizing Kelly’s head while Thomas Kelly ran back to his truck to retrieve a first aid kit.
“I just want to say thank you so much for helping her. It means a lot,” Kelly’s mother, Jen Scott, said.
For the Kellys, stepping in was second nature.
“We’re motorcycle riders too,” Lucy Kelly said. “I know how hard it is when someone goes down. We’ve helped other riders in accidents before. My husband was in the fire department for over 20 years and has worked on ambulances. We are keeping Amber in our prayers.” she said in a social media post on facebook.
Though Kelly faces a long road to recovery, her condition is improving. Her family asks for continued thoughts and prayers as she heals.
We also want to give a shoutout to The Leesburg Police Department for their quick response to the scene, directing traffic and ensuring the safety of Amber Kennedy.
Initially, there was concern that the driver of the SUV may have left the scene, but it was later confirmed that they pulled into a nearby parking lot and remained there. Law enforcement has cited the driver for the accident, and Amber was determined not to be at fault.
