What is low-dose radiation therapy?
A: Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) uses carefully targeted, low levels of radiation to reduce inflammation and relieve pain caused by certain benign, or noncancerous, conditions, and stops destruction of cartilage. The radiation dose is substantially lower than doses typically used to treat cancer.
What benign conditions may be treated with LDRT?
A: LDRT may be considered for osteoarthritis and other chronic inflammatory or degenerative conditions affecting joints and spine. Eligibility depends on the diagnosis, symptoms, prior treatments, and the radiation oncologist’s clinical assessment.
Who may be a candidate for treatment?
A: Patients may be considered when pain or limited mobility continues despite established conservative treatments. These treatments may include medications, injections, physical therapy, activity modification, bracing, or other appropriate medical care. LDRT may also be considered when these treatments are not tolerated or are medically contraindicated, and when the patient is not ready, willing, or medically able to pursue surgery.
How does LDRT help relieve symptoms?
A: LDRT is intended to produce an anti-inflammatory response in the treated area. By decreasing inflammation, treatment may reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling and may improve mobility. It stops the destruction of cartilage but does not repair cartilage or reverse existing joint damage.
What happens before treatment begins?
A: You will meet with a radiation oncologist who will review your medical history, imaging, diagnosis, symptoms, and previous treatments. If LDRT is appropriate, a planning appointment called a simulation will be scheduled to identify the exact treatment area and create a personalized plan.
What is treatment like?
A: Treatment is painless and usually takes only a few minutes, although additional time is needed for positioning. Radiation is delivered only to the planned area. A typical course may include several treatments scheduled over approximately two to three weeks, depending on the physician’s recommendation.
Are there side effects?
A: Side effects are generally limited because the radiation dose is low. Some patients may experience temporary soreness, mild skin irritation, or a short-term increase in symptoms. Your physician will discuss potential short- and long-term risks based on the area being treated.
Can LDRT be repeated?
A: Yes. The standard treatment approach consists of three cycles delivered within a structured timeframe, consistent with established European clinical protocols. The patient’s response will be evaluated at scheduled follow-up visits, and each additional cycle will be provided based on the physician’s clinical assessment.
Will insurance cover treatment?
A: Coverage varies by insurance plan and medical-necessity requirements. Our team will review benefits and obtain authorization when required before treatment begins.
