Magical Meat Boutique Pub Brings Authentic UK Flavors to Downtown Mount Dora

MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Step inside The Magical Meat Boutique in downtown Mount Dora, and you’ll feel a thousand miles — and a few decades — from Central Florida. Tartan trim, hearty laughs, and the unmistakable aroma of sausage rolls and proper fry-ups fill the air. But behind this beloved British gastropub lies a story as rich and savory as its shepherd’s pie — one that stretches back to postwar London and a family legacy of generosity, grit, and groovy reinvention.
Phil Barnard, the man behind the magic, isn’t your average publican. Before opening his pub on North Alexander Street, he built restaurants and pubs across the UK for others. But the roots of his culinary spirit reach back to 86 Plender Street in Camden Town, where his grandfather, William “Bill” Barnard, returned from World War II and set up Barnard Butchers.

(Bernard Butchers is where the story all started.)
“Granddad gave away meat to pensioners when rations were tight,” Phil recalls. “He painted cheeky slogans on the windows with whitewash, handed out chocolate at Christmas. It wasn’t just a shop. It was a bit of a lifeline.”
In the late ’50s, it was rebranded with a wink: “The Meat Boutique and Rump Steak Emporium.” But the real psychedelic shift came in 1963 when Phil’s father, Will, took the reins and rechristened the shop The Magical Meat Boutique. The storefront exploded in color, music from the Stones and Beatles pulsed from the radio, and Camden got its own slice of swinging ‘60s flair.

“My dad’s schoolmate worked at Apple Publishing — the Beatles’ label,” Phil says. “He saw our shop sign — curved font, stars above, rainbow below — and it inspired elements of the Magical Mystery Tour cover. That kind of makes me proud.”
As a boy, Phil spent weekends learning to make sausages and cut meat in that same shop. But when adulthood called, he charted his own course — until a 2004 family road trip through Florida altered his life.
“We landed in Sanford, looped down to the Keys, and ended up having our last night’s dinner in Mount Dora,” Phil remembers. “My mum loved it. She said if she won the lottery, she’d buy a house here for the grandkids.”

(If you walk into Magical Meat Boutique you will instantly feel like you are in a pub in London somewhere. It is awesome!)
Six months later, she passed away. When Phil inherited a portion of her estate, he honored her dream, buying a vacation home in Mount Dora. That sparked visits, friendships — and eventually a craving.
“I needed a bacon butty and a decent pint, so I stopped building pubs for others and built my own.”
He opened The Magical Meat Boutique on West 3rd Avenue in a former laundromat now home of The Salted Fry. During construction, he met Kate — now his wife and co-owner — who brought decades of hospitality expertise. Together, they’ve expanded the vision, moving to a larger space at 322 N. Alexander Street, fittingly the same building where his mother had her “holiday of a lifetime” meal.
Today, The Magical Meat Boutique is more than a pub — it’s a living love letter to heritage. Open seven days a week till midnight, it serves everything from English breakfasts to bangers and mash, Scotch eggs to sticky toffee pudding. Nearly all dishes are prepared in-house using imported British ingredients and time-honored recipes.

“Why fly 4,000 miles when you can get the same experience here?” Phil asks.
Events and festivals across Mount Dora, Longwood, Apopka, and Lake Eola now feature the pub’s mobile bar, pouring pints of rare ales and ciders with character and charm. And whether it’s the Scottish McKenzie Room or the subtle Irish and London nods throughout, the décor tells the story of Phil and Kate’s blended heritage.
“My family’s been in butchery since the 1500s. Kate’s got Scottish roots. We embrace it all,” Phil says.

Quirky, cozy, and crafted with care, The Magical Meat Boutique isn’t just a pub — it’s a timeline. One filled with butcher’s blocks, Beatlemania, and a bit of serendipity from a trip that changed everything.
If you have never been, you should make this a bucket list restaurant to visit. It’s one of the more unique places in Lake County. It’s places like this that truly makes Mount Dora so incredibly special.
