HUGH GRAVITT

Lessons learned: After leaving the military, I spent nearly 10 years struggling with alcoholism and a loss of purpose. Today, I’ve embraced my service and use those lessons to help others.

A partner to lean on: After years of battling mental health challenges on my own, I finally opened up to my wife. Sharing those struggles was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and she immediately helped me find support because she didn’t want our family to lose me. That conversation became a turning point in my life.

Starting Reforged: CrossFit and community changed my life. When my wife and I realized other veterans needed that same opportunity, we started Reforged Foundation to help them improve their physical, mental and spiritual well-being through fitness, accountability and community.

After the discharge: Transitioning to civilian life is one of the toughest challenges many veterans face. We leave behind a structured, mission-driven environment and often struggle with the loss of purpose, belonging and support. Too many veterans must navigate that transition without enough guidance.

Overcoming challenges: Whether it’s an ultramarathon, a “ruck” or climbing a mountain, each challenge is an opportunity to prove to myself that with discipline, perseverance and faith, I can achieve things I once thought were impossible.

I’m proud of: The husband and father I’ve become and grateful for the growth I’ve experienced in my faith. Building a strong family and growing closer to Jesus Christ mean more to me than any summit or finish line.

My mission: I used to define success by titles, promotions and income. Today, success is measured by impact. If I’m helping others, serving my community, strengthening my family and living out my faith, then I’m successful. Looking back, helping others has always given me the greatest sense of fulfillment.
