October Hit List: Tortoises, Farm Stands and Hometown Heroes

Slow and Steady
The familiar gopher tortoise is receiving renewed attention after a global conservation assessment classified the protected species as critically endangered. If you spot one, give it space and never disturb its burrow. The slow-moving reptile remains vital to the state’s ecosystem.

Street Smart
Have a rural address and post office box? Many post offices allow customers to use the post office’s street address with their box number to receive packages from carriers that do not deliver to PO boxes. The free street addressing service can make online shopping easier. Check with your local post office for availability and the correct address format.

Trick-or-Treat Safely
Make “boo-tiful” Halloween memories by following these tips from Safe Kids Worldwide:
- Carry glow sticks or flashlights and use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags to help children see and be seen.
- Accompany children younger than 12 while trick-or-treating.
- Drivers should slow down, remain alert and turn on headlights early. Excited children may dart into the street.
- Remind children to cross streets at corners or crosswalks.
- Choose properly fitting costumes to prevent trips and falls. When possible, use face paint instead of masks, which can limit children’s vision.

Representing Florida
South Sumter High School student Chase Bogart will represent the Florida Future Farmers of America chapter as a delegate at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo, Oct. 18–25 in Indianapolis. The South Sumter FFA member will participate in discussions, activities and business proceedings with members and leaders from across the country. The honor recognizes Chase’s commitment to agricultural education and leadership, teamwork, communication skills and parliamentary procedure. Thousands of students, advisors, educators and agricultural industry representatives are expected to attend.

Garden Symphony
A Swirl musical sculpture has become a popular feature at the Nunan Butterfly Garden on the grounds of the W.T. Bland Library in Mount Dora. The interactive instrument, donated to the city in 2024 by family and friends of Sebastian Morrison in his memory, was designed by a Grammy Award-winning musician to produce melodic sounds no matter which note is struck. Make some music at the garden.

Honor Among Farmers
Honor-system farm stands offering fresh eggs, produce, flowers, honey, homemade treats and a convenient way to support local farms are popping up along backroads in Lake and Sumter counties. Self-serve customers make their selections and leave payment in a cash box or through a digital payment app.

Heroism Honored
Deputy First Class Stefano Gargano received the Sons of the American Revolution Medal for Heroism from Lake County Sheriff Peyton C. Grinnell. The distinguished award recognizes Gargano’s outstanding bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of imminent danger. Congratulations to Gargano on this achievement and thank you for continuing to serve Lake County residents.

Sunday Yumday
Sundays are tastier at The Venue by Brix27, where brunch is served 10am–2pm. For $40 per person, guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat spread of brunch classics and chef-inspired surprises. Because brunch without drinks is just a “sad, late breakfast,” mixologists serve mimosas, Bloody Marys and specialty cocktails to complete the experience.
