On December 12, Leesburg High School became a hub of inspiration and opportunity as students engaged with a dynamic panel of professionals representing over 20 career fields. Hosted by the Powerhouse Youth Project, the event aimed to guide students in exploring their passions, discovering their potential, and preparing for life beyond high school.

“This career panel is put together for you,” Scott Chevalier, founder of Powerhouse Youth Project, says. “I wish they had this when I was in high school. If I had something like this, I would have had better direction on what to do with my life after high school.”

The panel included notable professionals such as Laura St. John, a seasoned performer who has built a career in entertainment. “The biggest part of entertainment is auditioning and connecting with the right people,” she says. “Networking will follow you everywhere in this type of business as everyone knows everyone.”

Also present was Lindsey Mallory, owner of Spray Mobile Tanning, who shared her journey of resilience and reinvention. “You can start a new path at any time,” she says. “With grit, determination, and dedication, you can achieve anything.”

The automotive industry was represented by Jackie Cox, who emphasized the value of skills beyond technical knowledge. “It’s not just about understanding how a V8 engine works,” she says. “It’s about project management, customer service, and teamwork.”

Several speakers highlighted the importance of finding one’s passion and pursuing it with commitment. Erin Carney, founder of a home organizing business, shared her unconventional path to entrepreneurship. “I started as a side gig, and with God’s blessing, it became a thriving business,” she says. “I don’t want you to wait 50 years to find your passion.”

Addie Owens, a real estate educator and industry leader, inspired students with her story of overcoming financial challenges. “I had less than $150 in the bank and two kids to raise,” she recalled. “Real estate allowed me to provide for my family while building and sustaining communities.”

Students were encouraged to ask questions and explore the diverse paths presented by the panelists. Each speaker shared actionable insights, from using YouTube to learn new skills to leveraging employer education programs like Disney’s Aspire initiative, which pays for employees’ college degrees. Keisha Cornelius, a panelist who benefited from the program, urged students to “get your foot in the door, even if it’s part-time. There are so many opportunities waiting for you.”

The career panel left a lasting impression on students and participants alike. “Everybody here doesn’t stay in the same career for 40 years,” Scott says. “You may find that transitions and new opportunities will speak to you.”

For students, the event was more than just a chance to hear from professionals—it was an opportunity to see firsthand the possibilities that await them. By the end of the session, the message was clear: with hard work, determination, and the right guidance, they can achieve their dreams. As one panelist summed up, “Each one of you has a gift. Lean into it, and let it lead you to greatness.”
