Progress Made Toward Rebuilding Britt Road After Hurricane Milton Collapse

After months of negotiations, Lake County officials have reached a purchase agreement for the land needed to reconstruct the collapsed section of Britt Road, according to County Commission Chairman Leslie Campione.

“After many months of negotiating with the adjoining landowner, Lake County has been able to secure a purchase agreement for land needed to reconstruct Britt Road,” Leslie says.

The property acquisition is a critical step forward in restoring access along Britt Road, which was severely damaged during Hurricane Milton. The road has remained closed due to the need for additional land to properly address drainage and structural issues caused by the storm.

“As part of the contract terms, the County is currently conducting its due diligence—survey work, environmental assessments, and an appraisal,” she says. “I’m hopeful this process will be concluded in the next 30–60 days.”

Once the due diligence phase is complete, the findings will be presented to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners for review and a final vote to proceed to closing. If the purchase is approved, the County will immediately pursue permits from State agencies and move forward with reconstruction.

The project will involve significant drainage improvements due to the steep slope and complex hydrology of the area.

“If it had been possible to rebuild the collapsed area without obtaining additional land and negotiating terms acceptable to the landowner, the road would have been opened months ago, similar to Round Lake Rd,” Leslie says.

The County will continue to update residents as the project moves forward. For additional information, residents are encouraged to contact Commissioner Leslie Campione directly at Leslie.Campione@lakecountyfl.gov.
