Rising Star: Bryson Mitchell Shines as South Sumter Baseball Pitcher

South Sumter freshman Bryson Mitchell is the youngest pitcher on the South Sumter roster. This young man has shown a lot of great promise through the first 13 innings of his high school baseball career.

Mitchell has thrown 13.2 innings in the 2024 season. He has 10 strikeouts and has only given up 6 earned runs over that span. Mitchell has been impressive and was a key contributor in last week’s game against The Villages that South Sumter nearly won. While Sophomore Jackson Gill has had the majority of innings pitched this season with 23, and Colter Shea also contributing, Mitchell is off to a stellar start to his career.

South Sumter is currently on a 5-game losing streak, but Mitchell has certainly been a bright spot this year for The Raiders. He has all the makings to be a great pitcher. Mitchell has faced 62 batters and is sitting on a 3.07 ERA. Jackson Gill leads the team with a 2.96 ERA.

He has only made 3 appearances in high school so far, but I like what I see out of this kid. He takes control on the mound and will continue to improve over the season and summer months. He was a standout performer on his Ballers-Lakeland-14U team.

South Sumter just took a loss from Central last evening, 4-0, but again Bryson Mitchell looked good on the mound. He pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs and two unearned runs off six hits. He also allowed just one walk.

South Sumter is just in a rut recently. They have been scoring runs, but the pitching has let them down recently. Last night the pitching was there, but the bats couldn’t contend with Central’s Justin Tranum, who pitched 5.2 innings and had 12 strikeouts.

Overall, we will continue to watch Bryson Mitchell develop over the next few years. He is an exciting prospect to have at South Sumter High.
