South Lake High’s Marissa Weaver Delivers Storybook Senior Night Walk-Off Grand Slam

GROVELAND, Fla. — In a night filled with emotion, family, and unforgettable heroics, South Lake High School senior Marissa Weaver gave her hometown of Groveland something to cheer about — and a moment that won’t soon be forgotten.
What started as a heartfelt family moment on senior night turned into a scene straight out of a Hollywood script.
Before the South Lake Eagles softball team took the field Thursday night against Viera High, the spotlight shined not just on the seniors, but on the unbreakable bond between siblings. Marissa, a standout senior for the softball team, wanted nothing more than to have her younger brother, Collin Weaver, a sophomore at South Lake High, by her side during the pregame senior ceremony. There was only one problem: Collin had a district championship baseball game to play across town for South Lake against Lake Minneola High.

(An incredible moment as Marissa Weaver’s brother Collin Weaver walks her down to home plate with the Weaver family for the last regular home game of Marissa’s career. Collin would head to Lake Minneola High to play in a district championship baseball game soon after this photo. You can see the emotion coming out.)
Enter South Lake coaches Eric Leitner and Jared Fullerton, who made sure family came first. Coach Fullerton moved the softball game up by ten minutes, and Coach Leitner ensured Collin could make the trip. It was enough time for Collin to escort his sister onto the field, share an emotional hug with their parents, and soak in the moment before dashing off to his own high-stakes game.
“It’s so great to know coaches care about teaching their players the importance of family and not just winning the game,” said TJ Weaver, proud father of the two student-athletes.

Marissa’s voice cracked as she addressed the crowd.
“My younger brother is my inspiration. He means everything to me and having him here on this night is incredible,” she said, bringing tears to the eyes of many in attendance — including Collin himself.
Then came the game.
While Collin scored the game’s only run for South Lake, the Eagles baseball team fell short 7-1 and finished as district runner-up. Meanwhile, the drama at the softball diamond was far from over. Down 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, South Lake loaded the bases. With two outs and the game on the line, it was Marissa who stepped up to the plate.

(Marissa holds the grand-slam ball that she won the game with last evening in a storybook ending to her regular season career as a senior.)
Fueled by emotion, years of preparation, and the memory of her brother’s embrace, Marissa crushed a towering shot over the outfield fence — a walk-off grand slam to win the game 8-6.
The crowd erupted. Tears turned to cheers as Marissa rounded the bases, her teammates awaiting her at home plate in celebration. It was a perfect ending to a night already full of heart. We also wanted to mention the other senior honored last evening Alyssa Bustos and congratulations to her as well.

(Senior Alyssa Bustos “left” was also honored on senior night alongside Marissa Weaver “right”.)
For the Weavers, it was a night that proved family, love, and sports can create magic. Congratulations to Marissa and the entire South Lake High softball team on a night we won’t soon forget!
