Urogynecology Expert

Bela Kudish, MD, MS, FACOG

Meet the Expert: Bela Kudish, MD, MS, FACOG, is a double board-certified, fellowship-trained urogynecologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex pelvic conditions, lower urinary tract disorders and pelvic floor dysfunction. With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Kudish is known for her compassionate approach.

How does urogynecology differ from general gynecology or urology?

A: Urogynecology combines aspects of gynecology and urology, focusing specifically on female pelvic floor disorders. We treat conditions involving bladder and bowel control, pelvic organ support and pelvic floor function. While general gynecology focuses on the overall health of the female reproductive system and urology deals with the urinary tract and male and female reproductive organs, urogynecology specifically addresses the overlap between these areas, particularly concerning the pelvic floor’s structure and function in women.

What are the most common conditions treated in your practice?

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Overactive bladder
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic pain
  • Bowel-control problems

There are a variety of pelvic floor disorders that can cause discomfort, pain or difficulties with bowel and bladder functions. My goal is to help patients manage these conditions through a variety of treatments, ranging from lifestyle changes and physical therapy to medications and surgery.

How do you diagnose and treat complex urogynecological conditions?

A: We begin with a detailed history and pelvic examination, followed by specialized testing — such as bladder-function testing, cystoscopy or imaging — when necessary. Based on the diagnostic findings, I develop a personalized treatment plan that may include behavioral changes, pelvic floor physical therapy, pessaries and office procedures. For more severe cases, surgical options may be recommended.

What specific services and treatments are offered?

A: We provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for female pelvic floor disorders. Services include:

  • Bladder retraining
  • Pelvic floor therapy
  • Pessary care
  • Urethral bulking
  • Sacral neuromodulation
  • Incontinence procedures
  • Vaginal, laparoscopic or robotic reconstructive surgery

Whenever possible we utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic-assisted surgery and laparoscopic procedures. These approaches often result in shorter recovery times, less pain and reduced scarring compared to traditional surgery.

Depending on the case, we may need to collaborate with other specialists, such as colorectal surgeons, urologists and physical therapists, to provide the most effective and personalized treatment.

We understand that the many of the conditions we treat here can significantly impact a woman’s daily life. Helping those patients regain control and comfort can dramatically enhance their overall quality of life.
