Tough on the Court: Sydney Guthrie Gets It Done

I’m especially proud of: Making the national team for my club volleyball team. I’d made the regional team for two years, but in 2022 I made the national team. It was a whole different game — a lot faster and more skilled girls. My club team has traveled to Philadelphia, Chicago, and Indianapolis for tournaments.
My greatest accomplishment in school: Maintaining a GPA of 4.0.
A great accomplishment in volleyball: Leading the Lady Canes, my school volleyball team, with 204 season “kills” (when a player spikes the ball and the defense doesn’t return it).
Favorite school subject: Biology. I had a really good teacher last year, Mrs. Gifford, and she really kept it interesting for me.
I am a member of: Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, and Access with Student Athletes (where student athletes work with special needs students).
A motto or belief I live by: There’s always room for improvement.
Outside of school, I spend the majority of time on: Volleyball practice every day. It takes up a lot of time, but I enjoy it. Because I play club volleyball and play for my high school team, volleyball is a year-round thing.
My greatest inspiration: My parents Christina Covelli and Steven Guthrie really push me in both sports and academics. They’re always motivating me to be a better player and person, to become the best I can be.
My future plans: Becoming a nurse or physician assistant (PA). I plan to go to school in Florida to stay near family and friends.
If I could change one thing with a snap of my fingers it would be: Getting rid of all trash in the world. It affects all the animals and their habitats.
My pets: I have four dogs: Milo, Sadie, Bo, Ollie. Three are Goldendoodles and one is an Australian Labradoodle.
My closest friends describe me as: Easygoing. Upbeat. Positive. Hard working.
Fun fact: Sydney likes to bake . . . especially chocolate cake!
