Umatilla High School Athletic Association Elevates Student-Athlete Experience Through Community Support
UMATILLA, Fla. (AP) — Over the past few years, the Umatilla High School Athletic Association (UHSAA) has significantly enhanced the experience of student-athletes at Umatilla High School, thanks to the unwavering support of the community. With the dedication of the Executive Board, school administration, and association members, substantial funds have been raised to provide a “college-like” experience for these young athletes.
The association’s efforts have been bolstered by the extraordinary generosity of the local community, which has played a crucial role in the success of UHSAA’s initiatives. Without this support, the association would not be able to achieve its goals.
UHSAA organizes two major events each year, along with two smaller ones, to engage the community and raise funds. In the fall, the Annual Bulldog Night serves as a premier social event, featuring raffles, a silent auction, food, and entertainment. This event brings together community members in a festive atmosphere, all in support of UHSAA’s mission.
A smaller fall event, the Golf Ball Drop, debuted last year and received an enthusiastic response. During this event, student-athletes sell numbered golf balls, which are then dropped from a helicopter before a football game. The golf ball landing closest to the pin at the 50-yard line wins, adding an element of excitement and competition.
In the spring, UHSAA hosts its annual golf tournament, where student-athletes participate in various competitions at designated tee boxes. This event also serves as a social gathering for the community, fostering camaraderie and support for the athletes. Additionally, this spring, the association plans to introduce a new event aimed at providing fun for all ages, further enhancing community engagement.
The UHSAA has had a big impact. Last year they raised $100,000 that they presented to then Umatilla High Athletic Director Pat Todd. Enhancements through the years have been used on upgrading the football locker rooms, natural grass football field “This upcoming year we are going to foucus on trying to enhance the softball facilities. The baseball stadium got upgrades last year so we really want to focus on the softball fields this upcoming year,” says JD Ross who is the president of the UHSAA.
The UHSAA extends its heartfelt gratitude to all community members for their generosity and support. These efforts create exceptional opportunities for student-athletes, enriching their high school experience and preparing them for future success.
The Executive Board members for this year are:
- JD Ross, President
- Ryan Wiles, Vice President
- Sarah Pounders, Treasurer
The position of Secretary is currently vacant, and the association is seeking a dedicated individual to fill this role.
For more information or to get involved, community members are encouraged to contact UHSAA.
