Umatilla Pharmacy to Close Two Years After Death of Founder “Doc” Greer

Umatilla Pharmacy will close its doors March 4, marking the end of a hometown institution that served generations of families under its late owner, Richard “Doc” Greer.

The pharmacy, formerly known as Umatilla Drug Store, announced the decision with “both appreciation and a heavy heart,” thanking patients for years of trust and shared memories.

“Our patients whom we truly cherish — thank you for trusting us with your care and the care of your families,” the Umatilla Pharmacy team shared in a statement. “Though our doors may be closing, the relationships and memories built here will remain forever.”

Beginning March 5, prescriptions will automatically transfer to Walgreens at 2005 N. Highway 19 in Eustis to ensure uninterrupted care. The pharmacy has asked customers not to request early transfers so staff can continue serving patients through the final day and personally say goodbye.

The closure comes two years after the passing of Richard, known throughout the community as “Doc.” A familiar face behind the counter, Doc was known as much for his faith and encouragement as for filling prescriptions.

In 2022, Greer published “Crossing Paths, Finding Hope,” a collection of stories inspired by customers and his own battle with a terminal heart diagnosis years earlier. After being told he had less than 60 days to live, he defied the prognosis and continued serving the community for more than ten years, often reminding others, “There’s a message in this mess.”

In February 2023, he faced another devastating diagnosis — stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Despite being given six months to live, Greer continued sharing his testimony of faith until his death 13 months later, surrounded by family.

For many, the pharmacy’s closing signals more than the loss of a business. It marks the end of an era defined by personal care, handwritten notes and a pharmacist who knew customers by name.

As the final week approaches, the staff says their focus remains on gratitude.

“From the bottom of our hearts,” the statement reads, “thank you for allowing us to be your pharmacy.”
