Every year on Dec. 7, the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade commences in Waikiki, Hawaii. The parade exists to honor veterans that served during the attack on Pearl Harbor and their families.

This year, eight senior cheerleaders from The Villages High School had the opportunity to perform in this legendary parade. These seniors are Alexis Collins, Abigail Ester, Lydia Hurlburt, Kacie Kradzinski, Remee Lopez, Kaedin Pham, Chaselyn Ponsford and Emily White.

This group of seniors worked incredibly hard to get to this point, partaking in several fundraisers to get the money needed for travel, as well as honing their skills to do well in the parade. They believe they earned this experience and that it is one that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

“Being part of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade meant a lot to me and my team,” says senior participant Abigail Ester. “It wasn’t just about performing. It was about honoring people who sacrificed so much for our country. Marching in the parade was very surreal and emotional, knowing we are a part of something that holds a deep meaning within our veterans and active military. It was an unforgettable experience that brought our team closer together and helped us understand the importance of remembrance and respect.”

The team’s trip to Hawaii was filled with fun activities, but these seniors choose to highlight the things that they learned as the most important part of their trip. While in Hawaii, the group visited the USS Arizona Memorial and paid their respects while learning, firsthand, about the sacrifices made in World War II.

“It was such an exciting experience,” says Emily White. “Being a part of this and honoring our veterans was something I know I won’t ever forget. I learned so much.”

According to the group, being able to participate in a celebration that is this important to the country was the opportunity of a lifetime and they are extremely proud.
