Youth Soccer Coach Corey Brooks Dies After Courageous Fight with Stage 4 Cancer

The Mount Dora and surrounding community is grieving the loss of local youth soccer coach Corey Brooks, who passed away on Friday after a courageous battle with stage 4 malignant melanoma.

Corey, a longtime coach with the city of Mount Dora and father of two, first underwent emergency brain surgery last year after a severe headache revealed a large tumor. Though the surgery was lifesaving, doctors later confirmed the cancer had spread to his brain and spinal fluid, beginning a renewed and aggressive fight.

In a heartbreaking post shared from his wife, Kaila Brooks announced his passing.

“My worst day has arrived,” she wrote. “When I saw him lying there so helpless, I told him I was there. I placed my hand on his chest and kissed him. That’s when he took his last breath.”

She shared that hospital staff believed Corey waited for her before letting go.

For months, the community rallied around the Brooks family with prayers, financial support and meals as Corey endured surgeries, radiation and mounting complications. A plea went out last month as the family was facing eviction, and the community help saved them from losing their home in the midst of his battle.

Known for his dedication and passion on the field, Corey mentored countless young athletes, shaping not only their soccer skills but their character.

Parents and players described him as dedicated, encouraging and deeply invested in every child he coached. Even as his health declined, the outpouring of love reflected the profound impact he made in the lives of local families, still coaching through it all.

Corey leaves behind his wife of 21 years and their two children. A GoFundMe campaign remains active to assist Kaila and the children with ongoing expenses, and community members who wish to support the family can contribute through the link below. https://gofund.me/3c61f5e58
