Brandon Bailey, 30
Company/Job Title: Tribal Acres Farm, Lead Farmer/Rancher
Job responsibilities: Managing day-to-day operations on the farm, raising and caring for our cattle, turkeys, meat chickens, meat ducks, and sheep.
What makes me passionate about my career: I am passionate about raising and providing meat that is raised right for our customers and their families. ‘Raised right’ means no hormones, no antibiotics, grass-fed and with regenerative practices which keep our grasses 100 percent organic.
Advice for the younger generation: Being in the farming field, it is not an easy place to be successful. I would say, ‘Don’t let things that life throws at you make you feel like you are not good enough or not qualified in your field.’ Ultimately, I say, ‘Trust the Lord and allow Him to guide and provide for you. But keep pushing even when no one is pushing with you.’
My life after 40: I see the farm with a store, hosting farm tours to educate people on how and where their meat comes from, and hosting events here and having lodging options so people can experience the farm life. I also desire to have a ton more animals so that we can keep up with needs of our ever-growing client base here on Tribal Acres. Building a home for our whole family is something that is super important to me as well since we have given up a lot to pursue this farming life.
Claire Ernst, 32
Company/Job title: Claire’s Creperie, Entrepreneur/Owner, but I’m also a Registered Nurse at AdventHealth Waterman.
Job Responsibilities: Menu creation, hiring, scheduling, purchasing, inventory management, customer relations, public relations, social media marketing, operating the shop, crepe artist, payroll, community outreach, event coordination.
How I got into my career: Claire’s Creperie opened in 2019. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a creative streak. I grew up selling fresh veggies and flowers from my family garden, and later I had a paper route. In middle school, I started a lawn mowing service in my neighborhood. Making fresh crepes was always a tradition in our family, and when I moved, I continued the tradition.
What makes me passionate about my career: My passion is bigger than just crepes. It is seeing families enjoy a tradition that is so near to my heart. It is beautiful to watch friends and family come together around a table full of crepes, sharing laughs and making memories.
Future goals: Travel and explore this big, beautiful world while trying all the local food. From Asia to Europe, and from Florida to Washington, every space and place has a different culture and food vibe and it is so fun to explore it all!
Jenn Clutts, 26
Company/Job Title: Lake County, Tourism Marketing Manager
Job responsibilities: I build relationships with Lake County municipalities, businesses and hotels that promote our area as a destination for visitors. I host travel writers/media on tours of Lake County, work with our marketing agency on state/national advertisements and marketing campaigns, manage social media and website content, oversee the rebranding of Visit Lake, and manage part of our event sponsorship program.
How I got into my career: I graduated from UCF in Communications, where I also interned with UCF Football Recruiting. In 2019, I began working as the Communications Coordinator with the City of Clermont. I gained incredible experience and learned a lot about South Lake County after having grown up in North Lake. After a couple years, I took a job in the Communications Department with Lake County Government and was promoted to my current role under the Economic Growth department.
What I love about my career: I’m passionate about marketing the passionate people that make Lake County great. Our goal in the Tourism Office is to share and promote as many of these types of stories as we can to people planning a visit to Lake County.
Advice for the younger generation: Don’t be afraid to ask questions from the people you look up to and surround yourself with people that are where you want to be.
In my spare time: I like rowing or doing something to help me get better at rowing. But any down time I get, I’m spending it with my family.
Brittany Meany, 32
Company/Job title: Morris Realty, Realtor
Job responsibilities: Finding people the home of their dreams and helping people to sell their home.
How I got into my career: I started with Morris Realty in August 2009 and earned my real estate license in 2016.
What makes me passionate about my career: Purchasing a home is one of the biggest investments most people make. I want to help guide them and give them the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.
My greatest professional achievement: I would have to say working full time and going to school to complete my real estate license and taking care of my toddler.
Advice for the younger generation: Stay focused and follow your dreams. Sometimes you just have to jump.
In my spare time: I spend time with my kids, family, and friends.
Life after 40: I hope to continue to help many more families with their real estate needs and continue watching my kiddos grow.
Amanda Ansbaugh, 35
Company/Job title: Total Nutrition and Therapeutics, Physician Assistant and Functional Medicine Provider.
Job responsibilities: Our mission is to arm our clients with knowledge so they can take charge of how they eat, drink, move, sleep, and think, therefore pushing toward healing and regaining function to live their best lives.
My greatest professional achievement: Honestly, my sense of accomplishment comes from my patients. When they come to me at a low and I can make them laugh and smile, provide hope and quality care, that’s a good day. When patients come back to tell me that the testing I did, the exam I gave, the care I helped them receive after seeing me helped save their life … that’s what I do this for.
In my spare time: I spend time with my children, playing, bringing them places and experiencing the world again through their eyes and expressions. Otherwise, it’s exercise, off-roading, gardening, riding, range time, home-improvement projects, beach walking, hanging with friends, and bonfires when the weather’s right.
My life after 40: Raising my babies and continuing to strive for a healthy work-life balance. As for the future, who knows? My life has always taken unexpected twists and turns, but it has put me right where I am supposed to be. So, I’m just going to prepare for the possibilities and enjoy the ride.
Joseph Bostwick, 18
Career/Job title: University of Central Florida (UCF) Student/Published Author
My life: I am studying creative writing at UCF. Aside from my studies, I write whatever I feel motivated writing about.
What makes me passionate about writing: It’s very difficult to explain, but I’ve been around the arts my entire life, from classical music, to art, to literature. My mom always pushed books and reading, so later in my high school years, I developed a huge love for literature/expressing myself through writing, and now I am utterly obsessed.
My greatest accomplishment thus far: I published my first book, “A Rotten Mind,” a short story about the pain of memory loss, before I graduated high school. I am also publishing my second book before I turn 19.
My advice to others regarding success: It’s very, very important to put your whole heart and soul into whatever you love and inspires you the most. That’s regardless of what people around you say, and regardless of whether you have support. Love and support will come to you if you put your all into whatever you want to do.
In my spare time: I find myself reading or writing. I love it so much that it doesn’t feel like work or a job.
Where I see myself in the future: I am working towards becoming a Philosophy/English professor before I turn 30 and working towards becoming a senior lecturer and researcher by age 40.
André D. Sesler, 36
Company/Job title: Hinshaw & Culbertson. LLP, Partner/Attorney
How I got into my career: I graduated from the University of Florida-Levin College of Law in 2011 and began my legal career that same year in the South Florida offices (Miami and Fort Lauderdale) of a firm after passing the Florida Bar exam.
My greatest professional achievement: My biggest professional accomplishment, aside from favorable legal rulings as high up as the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit (one level shy of the US Supreme Court), would have to be attaining status of partner in such a large national firm.
In my spare time: Spending time with my wife Krystal and daughters Zora and Zola, enjoying all that nature has to offer in this beautiful Florida weather — hiking, beaching, camping and fishing.
life after 40: I see myself continuing on my current career trajectory into broader leadership roles within this national firm, potentially culminating with obtaining a seat on the Judiciary at some level within the State. On a more personal note, I plan to devote more time to achieving my goal of creating a foundation through which I cover the college expenses for a group of kids every year back in my Sumter County community. The ultimate focus of that foundation would be aimed at permanently altering the generational trajectory of each recipient.
Korrin Towler, 25
Company/Job title: Her & Co., Owner/Stylist/Cosmetologist
How I got into my career: Being the default friend to do everyone’s hair before an outing, I decided to go to cosmetology school in 2017, and it has completely changed my life. I never would have thought almost five years later the beauty industry would have brought me so many blessings that I am forever thankful for.
What makes me passionate about my career: It is so much more than just doing hair. I have met some amazing people that I would’ve never had the chance of crossing their path if I wasn’t in this profession. I love being able to provide a safe space for my clients to talk freely and just be who they are and know that there is never any judgment here.
My greatest professional achievement: Opening my own salon a year ago. As a 20-year-old cosmetology student, I would’ve never believed it.
My life after 40: I see myself rocking wife life and being a mom as we will be welcoming a sweet baby boy in February 2023. I plan to continue to doing hair and keep pouring into my clients. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for me in the next 40 years that I don’t even have a clue about yet.
Allison Fogarty, 31
Company/Job Title: Doggie Delights by Allison, CEO and Dog Treat Chef
Job responsibilities: I develop and mix my own dog treat recipes with the help of my sidekicks (parents).
How I got into my career: I started my company in October 2017. I attended the first class of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida’s Entrepreneur Academy. I knew I wanted to make dog treats instead of people food because I can do that myself and certification is much easier to achieve. To read more about what exactly led me to start wanting to cook, visit DoggyDelightsByAllison.com.
What makes you passionate about your career: I LOVE to cook and love it when dogs are excited to get my treats. I also know my treats taste good and are healthy for dogs.
My greatest career accomplishment: Making dog treats with my hero, Rachael Ray. Flying to New York, getting treated like a star, and showing Rachael how I make Sweet Potato Delights on TV was amazing! I loved it when she ate one of my treats and said that it was delicious.
Advice for the younger generation: Dream BIG but start small and make sure that you really love it, because you’ll have to keep doing it for a long time!
In my spare time: I love to go out to dinner and a movie with my boyfriend Brent.
After 40: My dream is to have a little shop to sell my dog treats out of, with an apartment above for my boyfriend and I to live in.
Brenda Anderson, 39
Company/Job title: Brenda Anderson Photography, Owner
Job responsibilities: Capturing moments, editing, communication with clients, social media, and everything else. I am a one-woman business.
How I got into my career: I wanted to take better pictures of the daily moments of my own children. I started my business in 2013 and opened my studio (downtown Tavares) in 2015.
What makes me passionate about my career: I take to heart how extremely important photography is. Every moment deserves to be captured, whether a blissful time, exhausting time, or heartbreaking time. Photos bring back memories and tell stories that will be passed on for generations. Seeing clients print off images and hang them in their homes is incredible. We live in a digital world, so printing and hanging photos for all in the home to see brings such joy.
My greatest professional accomplishment: I consider my biggest accomplishment is the continued support from my amazing clients. I built my business from the ground up, starting as a hobby. I started off photographing family and friends, to now booking up months in advance – a truly humbling accomplishment.
My life after 40: Well, seeing that I am actually about to turn 40, I should have thought about this one a tad more. I am planning on continuing my photography journey as long as families continue to invest in me.
Elaina Eller, 38
Company/Job Title: Essential Therapies Spa, Director of Spa/Licensed Massage Therapist
Job responsibilities: I have created and implemented every spa platform, including establishing business profitability through systems and structures, education, and training.
How I got into my career: After graduating massage therapy school, I was at the owner’s house waiting for her son (my close friend), when she offered me a part-time receptionist job. Little did I know that day would shape the rest of my life. I worked my way up from receptionist to massage therapist, manager, director, and now I’m in the process of buying the company.
What makes me passionate about my career: After a complicated surgery, my mom—who’d struggled with hip and knee problems since childhood—could only walk short distances with a walker. With help from a massage therapist, she eventually graduated to walking with a cane, regaining control and confidence in her life. I thought it was amazing to be able to help another person in that way. After graduating, I took over my mom’s treatment. To be able to give back to the woman who adopted me and gave me a beautiful, love-filled life was one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Advice for the younger generation: Do hard things, fail at them, then do them again. Lean into change, don’t fear it. Communicate effectively and ask for help. Take care of the people around you. Know that your hard work and dedication will facilitate the outcome that you want.
Joshua Huffines, 37
Company/Job title: Umatilla Animal Hospital, Veterinarian/Owner
Job responsibilities: General Medicine and Surgery
How I got into the veterinary field: I graduated from Tuskegee University in 2013. Before that I worked with several local veterinarians.
What makes me passionate about my career: My love for animals and the human/animal bond.
My greatest career accomplishment: Hospital ownership. As the veterinary industry becomes more corporate there are fewer and fewer young people willing to take on the responsibilities of owning an animal hospital. Of course, having a wife who is also a wonderful veterinarian helps big time!
My advice for the younger generation: My dad told me a long time ago that if something is easy, it is probably not worth going after. Success is more often than not a product of hard work and sacrifice.
In my spare time: I enjoy horseback riding with my wife, camping with my kids, and fishing with my little brother.
My life after 40: One day, I hope to mentor the next generation of young veterinarians, just as I was mentored.
Christina Vukel, 16
Career/Job title: High School Student, Musician/Singer/Songwriter
How I got into my career: My passion for music started when I was two-and-a-half-years old and grew stronger as I got into my teenage years. I had the desire to write and perform music and felt I needed to give it an outlet so that other people could hear and enjoy it. I started with recording and producing music, then reached out to my school and arts centers in various cities for performance opportunities.
What makes me feel passionate about my career: I’m inspired by all the songs that come to my head that I need to let out. Sharing them with the world is where the passion for my music career comes in.
My greatest career accomplishment thus far: Having 26 songs out in all music platforms by the age of 16 and releasing my first album, “They Say.”
My advice to others regarding success: It’s never too late to find what makes you happy, so go for it. I meet so many people that tell me how they regret giving up on music careers. Second, giving up is easy, so easy that it’s worth double and triple checking your decision because once you do it, it can become a habit for other hard decisions.
In my spare time: I enjoy drawing. it calms me down.
Where I see myself in the future: If fortunate, most definitely writing music about growing older and about my future kids.
Katie Sartoris, 33
Company/Job Title: The Penny Hoarder, Senior Editor of Freelance
How I got into my career: I’ve always loved to write, but when I was younger, I was very shy. I thought journalism would allow me to hone my writing skills plus force me to get more comfortable talking to people, and it has. I started with my college newspaper in 2009 but got my first full-time job in 2012. Prior to my current job, I was a reporter, then editor, at the Daily Commercial.
What makes me passionate about my career: I truly believe journalism is crucial for a healthy society. I also love people, so being able to tell others’ stories has been an immense privilege. Administratively, I enjoy managing and helping people identify/reach their goals. I consider their successes mine, too.
My advice for the younger generation: I love my job. It’s stimulating, fulfilling and fun. But it does not completely define me. It’s taken me too long to realize how important it is to keep a distance between my identity and self-worth versus what I do, especially when there are professional setbacks. I am a journalist, but I’m also a whole human with relationships, responsibilities, needs and interests outside of my work.
In my spare time: I’m a spin instructor at an area gym, I love craft beer, fancy cocktails, good food, and I’m a thrift store enthusiast. My husband and I are working on updating, restoring, and decorating our mid-century home.
Life after 40: I got married recently, and I’m excited to start that journey. I hope by 40, I’ve got a kid or two and I’m still a good boss at a company that values its employees.
Keith Seifert Jr., 33
Company/Job Title: The Sweet Bee Company, President/CEO
How I got into my career: I started working with bees in 2005 as a teenager while attending Umatilla High School, and quickly fell in love with it. In 2011, I went out on my own and founded The Sweet Bee Company.
What makes me passionate about my career: The care and attention required to be a beekeeper, plus waking up every day and putting in an honest day’s work, has always aligned with my values and work ethic. Also, honeybees are such fascinating and intricate beings and I have always yearned to learn more about them.
My greatest career accomplishment: I am a first-generation beekeeper in an industry dominated by decades-old multigeneration family companies. Through hard work, dedication, and love of this industry, however, I’ve proven myself a respected member of the beekeeping community. In a full circle moment, I recently bought out a company I worked for in high school.
My advice to the younger generation: Have a dream, set your plan in motion, and work harder than the average person. That’s the only secret to success, because only then will you accomplish more than the average person.
In my spare time: I enjoy spending time with my wife and family, whether boating, skiing, hunting, or watching college football.
Life after 40: To continue growing our business to reach new markets and teaching our craft to the next generation of Florida beekeepers.
Daniel Morrison, 39
Company/Job title: Leware Construction, Project Manager
Job responsibilities: Overseeing all phases of bridge construction, project management, project scheduling, ordering and scheduling of delivery of materials to job sites.
What makes me passionate about my career: My passion is seeing our projects completed after all the hard work is put in and knowing that I took part in building something that affects millions of people every day and gets them to where they are going safely.
My greatest professional achievement: I’ve wanted to do project management for a long time. A little over a year ago, I was offered a position as a project manager with Leware Construction and began my first project in April.
Advice for the younger generation: Hard work and perseverance will pay off in the end. Enjoy what you do and you will excel both individually and professionally.
In my spare time: I spend time with my family and friends and love being in the outdoors. Hunting and fishing are at the top of my list.
My life after 40: After 40, I see myself continuing to grow in my career and being part of the next generation of Leware Construction.
Jordan Burkholder, 33
Company/Job title: City of Eustis Fire Department, Lieutenant/Paramedic
Job responsibilities: Supervising and overseeing daily operational aspects of the shift, as well as managing emergency scenes. As a paramedic and field training officer, I perform advanced life support interventions and train newly-certified paramedics to work as solo paramedics within our system.
How I got into my career: I enrolled in the fire academy shortly after graduating high school, and then went directly into EMT school. Upon completion of both programs, I applied for a part-time position at the City of Eustis. I was born and raised in Eustis and attended Eustis schools. I felt it was a great opportunity to give back to the community that taught me and gave me so much.
Advice for the younger generation: Don’t be afraid to try something new and fail at it. Every master was once a beginner. We all try something new at some point and through hard work, dedication, and willingness to keep trying, you will achieve great things and accomplish your goals. Find someone you look up to in your desired field and understand the qualities that make him or her a great leader. Then try to emulate those qualities.
Benjamin Williams, 32
Company/Job title: Pest Ref Services, Inc., Owner & CEO
Job responsibilities: Customer service, management, marketing, scheduling and servicing accounts.
How I got into my career: In 2014, I started with Massey Services, a company I came across at a job fair.
My greatest career accomplishment: Starting my own pest control company at the age of 29.
What makes me passionate about my career: I love dealing with customers and providing great customer service.
Advice for the younger generation: Follow the acronym for F.O.C.U.S, which stands for ‘Follow One Course Until Successful.’
In my spare time: I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, volunteering and going to church.
After 40: I see myself growing my company to provide service in multiple locations. I also see myself becoming a motivational speaker, author, and creating nonprofit foundations to help less fortunate kids with accomplishing their goals and dreams.
Amanda Nethero, 39
Company/Job Title: New Heights Communication, Owner
Career: Social Media Marketing and Public Relations
Job responsibilities: I work with businesses to take their social media marketing to new heights, which includes analyzing their current efforts and tweaking as needed while potentially implementing new channels.
How I got into my career: I have been in marketing for about 15 years, starting with social media marketing in 2019 after a friend and colleague asked for help. I went out on my own in 2021 and it has been the most amazing, fulfilling journey.
What makes me passionate about my career: I was trained by Disney many years ago and the art of storytelling was one of many skills that stuck with me. Being able to share a brand’s story and having connections happen in real time is something that drives my passion. I love giving brands the opportunity to connect with their customers and foster a relationship that is more than just a transaction.
My biggest professional accomplishment: Recently I was part of the team that won a Sunsational Award from the Florida Festivals and Events Association. It was a huge testament to the hard work that was put in on that project.
Advice to younger generation: Get a mentor! It’s the only way you will grow professionally and personally. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some amazing mentors over the years and I could never have achieved the success I have if not for them.
Janette Watkins, 34
Company/Job Title: Treadway Elementary School, Math/Science Coach and Tri-City Dance Twirlers, Coach
How I got into my career: I began teaching in 2012 because, to this day I remember everything about fifth grade. Mr. Allison showed his love for learning daily. His lessons were related to real-world situations, including thrilling themes, and he made learning exciting. During high school, I started coaching baton twirling and realized the excitement when children learn (or catch) something new is indescribable, and I knew I wanted to make an impact on lifelong learning.
My greatest professional achievement: I view becoming a math and science coach as my biggest professional accomplishment. I get the best of both worlds. I am able to support teachers and reach more students than when I had my own classroom.
My life after 40: I’d like to make more of a positive impact in education. I’m not sure what that looks like, but being able to support more teachers and students within the district, State of Florida, and even nationwide, is what I look forward to.
Nikki Anderson, 33
Company: Nikki’s Sweet Cakes & Whimsy Market
Job Title: Baker of Nikki’s Sweet Cakes and vendor coordinator of Whimsy Market
Job responsibilities: With Nikki’s Sweet Cakes, I make custom cakes, cupcakes, treats, and more. With Whimsy Market, I am in a partnership with another small business owner, but my main job is being the vendor coordinator and organizing our layouts, social media posts/graphics, and more.
What makes me passionate about my career: With Nikki’s Sweet Cakes, I enjoy making people happy and being creative. I believe cake decorators are artists. We put so much love and thought into our work. Seeing someone with a huge smile on their face after seeing a cake I created, or telling me how much they loved the flavor of my treats, makes all the stresses worth it. With Whimsy Market, I love helping other small businesses succeed and get their name out there.
In my spare time: I mostly spend enjoying family time as much as possible. My life has me going 150 mph all the time — I also manage my husband’s business — so anytime I get time to do something with just them, I take it.
My life after 40: I hope to still be doing what I’m doing. Even with all the stresses and doubts, I love both of my small businesses and how much joy they bring to others.
Lyndsi Johnson, 34
Company/Job title: SouthState Bank, Commercial Lender/Business Relationship Manager
Job responsibilities: I develop and deepen existing business and commercial relationships by providing financial and cash flow solutions that improve the well-being of my clients and their businesses.
How I got into my career: I started in banking as a teller in 2007. After working my way up on the retail side, I landed on the commercial side of the bank and haven’t looked back.
My greatest professional accomplishment: When I became a commercial lender, I took a leap of faith, left what was comfortable, and have only continued to grow both personally and professionally. Also, when I closed on my largest loan to date when I financed a private plane for a commercial client, I learned a lot about aviation!
In my spare time: I love to go on new adventures with my husband and 5-year-old son. We like to be active, whether it is exploring new parks or trails, kayaking, or just doing anything outside in the beautiful Florida sunshine!
My life after 40: To be determined! I’m not the kind of person to ever settle; I am always striving for more. The only goal of mine that has never changed is to simply be happy in life. Regardless of what position or title I hold, if I am not happy in what I am doing, what is the point?
Chanel Martin, 28
Company/Job Title: Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Road Patrol Corporal
Job responsibilities: Currently, I supervise multiple road patrol deputies, approve their daily reports, ensure they have the resources they need, and that policies are being adhered to. I also have an immediate supervisor and feel that it is important to relieve whatever duties of theirs that I can assist with while they tend to other responsibilities.
What makes me passionate about my career: I see my profession and career path as one with enriching opportunities. Growing up, my family didn’t have the best perception of law enforcement compared to their now overall understanding. However, I knew, like in any profession, there are honest and hardworking employees and those whose actions are frowned upon. I always wanted to be a part of something larger than myself and join those that make this profession an honest one.
In my spare time: I have an amazing partner, my best friend, and we have been inseparable since high school. I enjoy our free time together in the comfort of our own home, any activities to do with water, trying new foods (or food in general), and exploring different restaurants.
My life after 40: My goal is to eventually achieve the rank of lieutenant at the Sheriff’s Office on Road Patrol. I believe working on the road has been a large part of my experience, and I appreciate all that it has to offer.
Erika Buigas, 37
Company/Job Title: Tavares Chamber of Commerce, President/CEO
How I got into my career: I attended events and volunteered with the Chamber, and in May 2019, I was asked to temporarily fill in while a permanent administrative assistant was found. In August 2021, after a few promotions and title changes, I became President/CEO.
What makes me passionate about my career: I have days where I’m able to do all the things I love and am comfortable with, things that come easily to me, and days that are more of a challenge and make me grow. The combination of all these responsibilities really keep me fired up.
My advice for the younger generation: Say yes, but know when to say no. Lend a hand. Do the uncomfortable thing that you think is outside of your comfort zone at least once. Wear fun shoes, because fun shoes always make you smile. Most importantly, be a good person, that will get you far.
In my spare time: I’m a major homebody. There are few things better than hibernating at home with coffee, snacks, streaming services, and pajamas!
In my future: I have three years until I turn 40 and in those three years, I’ll be sending my three teenagers off to college and learning what an empty nest feels like for the first time in my adult life. While I can’t plan for life after that huge shift, I’m hopeful that I’ll still be working on growing and evolving the Chamber while growing myself because I truly believe that if you’re not growing, you’re dying.
Kelsey Gonzalez, 33
Company/Title: Lake Cares Food Pantry, Executive Director
Job responsibilities: Overseeing the pantry’s daily operations, fundraising efforts, advocating for our clients’ needs, and maintaining positive relationships within our community.
How I got into my career: I was asked by the past executive director Irene O’Malley to apply for her job once she retired. Prior to coming to Lake Cares in 2021, I worked for 15 years as the Area Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida. Irene and I had known each other through the non-profit world, and she knew that I would have the heart and passion for the food pantry’s new growth.
What makes me passionate about my career: Helping others. My motto is “service over self.”
My greatest career accomplishment: Becoming a CEO at the age of 26 and successfully merging two major Boys and Girls Club organizations together.
Advice to the younger generation: Work hard to get what you work for, not what you wish for.
In my spare time: I spend as much time as I can with my high school sweetheart and our two children, Ava, 6, and Ian, 4. I also live to bake. I currently run a side business—an at-home bakery—called Seneca Sweets.
Life after 40: I plan to still be here at the food pantry serving more clients who need our services throughout Lake County out of our brand new 22,000-square-foot warehouse facility currently being built.
Samuel Dapena, 27

My life after 40: It is very hard to tell. There are so many options in this world and paths to follow and/or pave for myself and others.
Levi Burns, 33
Company/Job Title: Madden Designs and Grayco Performance Eyewear, Owner/CEO/Designer

My life after 40: Continue to give back here in Lake County where I was born and raised and continue to grow Grayco and Madden.
Liliana Gonzalez, 29
Company/Job title: Modern Granite, LLC, Sales/Office Manager
Job responsibilities: My husband Leo and I measure job sites, have slabs cut and fabricated, loaded, and driven to sites for installation. I schedule most meetings with customers, plus I drive the crew and am present during transactions/installations to ensure customers can communicate any questions or concerns they may have through me.
How I got into my career: I got into this industry by supporting my husband’s passion for it and told him I would help him succeed.
What makes you passionate about my career: Having the ability to help customers bring their dream kitchen to life just fills my heart.
My greatest career accomplishment: Obtaining our own shop and matrix bridge saw machine. We started off renting a small area at our friend’s shop, so branching out on our own is something we are beyond grateful for.
My advice for the younger generation: Never be afraid and never give up. If you have a passion for something, go for it. You’re never “too young.” There is no set age for entrepreneurship.
Favorite pastime: Family. I love spending time with my husband and our three children: Sophia, 5, Leo Jr. 4, and Daniella, 2.
Life after 40: Our long-term goal is having a bigger location with a showroom, multiple employees and developing bigger projects for long-term business contracts.
Anna Stanage, 33
Company/Job Title: Stanage Tree Service (STS), VP-Office Manager
Job responsibilities: I oversee all operations and overall presentation, which includes handling the office, personnel, HR, scheduling, marketing, insurance, contracts, and more.
How I got into my career: My husband Bryan had a dream of starting his own company, so I began helping with odds and ends and quickly discovered I enjoyed working alongside him. We became incorporated in 2011.
What makes me passionate about my career: The love I have for our business, our team. The ability to create and specialize in an industry that is typically overlooked.
My greatest career accomplishment: Our company was awarded The Villages District Contract in 2021. It was my first contract proposal we put together.
My advice to the younger generation: To be true to who you are; reputation can make or break you. Whatever career you choose, give it your best, be honest and never give up. The success will come.
In my spare time: I enjoy soaking up Florida’s sunshine, on any type of water with my husband, two sons and pups.
Life after 40: I believe I will still be overseeing the operations here at STS, Bryan and I have huge dreams for our company and teams. We will not stop until we achieve them.
Morgan Hatfield, 37
Career: I am a Senior Wealth Advisor and Partner at Ruggie Wealth Management in Tavares. I also serve as an elected trustee on the SECO Energy Board of Trustees. I represent District 9, which is the district I reside in.
Job Title: Senior Wealth Advisor and Partner
How I got into my career: My mom taught me to save before I was even in elementary school. We would sit at our kitchen table and roll change. Then she would take me to the bank and we would deposit it into my savings account. I always had an affinity for saving and during my junior year at UCF I was fortunate enough to get an internship with Ruggie Wealth. I realized the importance of being an independent advisor and not letting a product dictate what is best for a client. I graduated from UCF with my Bachelor of Science in finance, and the rest is history.
What makes me passionate about my career: Having a relationship with my clients. These are people I care about and I want them to be successful. I love getting to see the hard work pay off.
In my spare time: I enjoy roller skating. Fun fact: I used to play roller derby. I also enjoy sitting in the pasture with my donkeys and cows, antique shopping, driving my 1969 Mustang fastback, and spending time with my husband and family.
Morgan Myer, 19
Company/Job Title: The Rowdy Ragdoll Boutique, Owner
How I got into my career: I started my career in 2021, a little over a year ago, working at a boutique called Prominent Fox. I fell in love with the retail industry and knew I wanted to have my own boutique that I could operate as my long-term career, so I opened The Rowdy Ragdoll in Leesburg.
What makes me passionate about my career: I’ve always loved everything about fashion, and putting different outfits together for myself has always been so fun. When I started working in a boutique, I realized that I could use my passion to help other girls find their personal style and find clothing that makes them feel like the most beautiful version of themselves. I’ve always said I’m in a better mood when I’m wearing a good outfit, and I love helping others achieve that feeling as well.
My greatest career accomplishment: Opening a storefront boutique at 19 years old.
My advice for the younger generation: Finding something you love to do is definitely the most important part of attaining a successful career. Don’t just pick a career because you think it will make you the most money. If you don’t love what you do, you’ll never truly thrive while doing it.
In my spare time: I like spending time with my family, shopping, and riding.
Where I see myself in the future: On a ranch in Texas raising mini cows.
Meghan Ayotte, 37
Company/Job Title: UF Leesburg ER/Director of Emergency Services/Registered Nurse
What fuels my career passion: I enjoy coming to work to make a difference, not only for our community and our patients, but for all our hard-working healthcare professionals. Building relationships with my team and seeing change happen keeps me motivated about what I do.
My greatest career accomplishment: The design and implementation of a clinic located within the emergency departments I was working in at the time that provided monoclonal antibody/IV therapy for very sick COVID patients during the pandemic. With this treatment, we were able to keep many patients out of the hospital and safely at home, which made space for the facility to care for those who needed admission.
My advice for the younger generation: Set goals for yourself and go for them. Take risks without being afraid. Continue your education and follow your dreams. It is amazing what you can accomplish with motivation and persistence.
In my spare time: I love to cook, travel, run and spend time with my family. We are huge college football fans and go to as many games as we can. GO GATORS!
Life after 40: My biggest priority will continue to be my family. First and foremost, I want to make sure my children grow up happy and know that they are supported in whatever they do. Jobwise, I feel like the sky is the limit. I love my UF family and would love to grow and someday expand my role within the organization.
Jaya Badhwar Kumar, 36
Company/Job title: Florida Retina Institute, Vitreoretinal Specialist and Partner
Career: Ophthalmology. I am a fellowship-trained Ophthalmologist
Job responsibilities: My primary job responsibility is taking care of patients in the clinic and performing surgery for retinal conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. Our practice strives to bond with the community where we provide care. I play an active role in leading several of our community outreach programs, such as the annual Vision Walk, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Suicide Walk, breast cancer awareness runs, and diabetes awareness events.
My greatest professional accomplishment: Becoming the first female partner at Florida Retina Institute. I am privileged and honored to have joined such an accomplished group of compassionate, ethical, and highly-trained physicians.
In my spare time: I love going on adventures with my family. My husband and I love to travel, but also enjoy staycations. We have a 2-year-old boy and a baby girl on the way. I am passionate about dance, music, and baking.
My life after 40: I hope to get more involved with mentoring and teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. I hope to do more medical mission trips—like I did three years ago in Jamaica—to provide eye care to underserved communities.
Vershurn Ford, 29
Company/Job Title: City of Mount Dora, Public Information Officer
Career: Public & Local Government Relations
Job responsibilities: Under designation of the Mayor, I act as the public face of the City of Mount Dora. I plan and hold press conferences, provide essential information/major news to the general public, coordinate details with department heads and local politicians, prepare speeches, brochures, press releases, develop good relationships with local businesses, and more.
How I got into my career: I’ve worked in the Public Relations realm for many years, but never really looked into what that could look like long-term until I left the nonprofit world and started working for the City of Mount Dora in 2019.
What makes me passionate about my career: My job at its very core pays homage to the freedom of information. The public deserves to understand what is going on in their politics, whether local, state or federal. My job allows me the opportunity to ensure content is not only readily available, but also clear and readable to all consumers.
Advice for the younger generation: Success is personal, meaning it looks different from person to person. Allow yourself grace in the process.
In my spare time: I enjoy socializing, going out supporting local restaurants or vendors, meeting new friends. My work can often take priority, so I really make it a point to enjoy myself in my free time.
My life after 40: I hope to develop my role into a director position and have a team of communicators under my department: social media, marketing and storytelling thought-leaders.
Matthew Fernandez, 24
Company/Job title: TB Financial Group, Investment Adviser Representative and Insurance Agent
Job responsibilities: I assist clients in defining clear goals and expectations and educate them on the products and services available to help them utilize their available funds to achieve important financial goals.
How I got into my career: For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a desire to be in the financial services industry. It started after learning the power of investing from my great grandfather. I earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Florida State University in 2020 and began studying for my insurance and securities licenses shortly thereafter.
My greatest professional achievement: Leading our team in a proactive approach toward making our operations more efficient, as well as creating an environment that we all feel great about coming to every day.
In my spare time: Whenever I am not focusing on my work or studies, you can catch me enjoying time out on the ocean. Whether I am fishing, strolling the bay, or stranded miles from land with a blown engine, you will find me with a smile.
My life after 40: I aspire of one day having a beautiful family and owning an investment firm in South Florida, where I was born and raised.
Trevor Boesse-Dupuis, 26
Company/Job title: Trevor & Son Lawn Care, owner
Job responsibilities: Maintaining commercial and residential lawns and landscape.
How I got started in my career: It has always been my dream to start a lawn care business, and after the birth of my son it finally pushed me to achieve my goal for a better future for him and our family.
My greatest professional achievement: Being able to reach over 75 clients in such a short period of time and being able to hire my first full-time employee.
Advice for the younger generation: If you have a dream, then you should go for it as soon as you can. Owning your own business is very hard, but you quickly realize that making other people happy is very satisfying.
In my spare time: I spend time with my fiancée and our son. It’s the most special thing to do when I’m not working — makes me very proud.
My life after 40: After 40, I see myself still owning my lawn care business. I see hiring a few crews, that way I can spend more time with my family. My future is going to be very bright where my family will be in a good place. My son will have a good life, and hopefully he will want to work right next to his dad.
Kelly Owens, 39 (left)
Company/Job title: Ocala Fire Rescue, Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
How I got into firefighting: It was accidental. I graduated college with an AA degree in Elementary Education. My twin sister Robin was starting fire college and begged me to go with her. The rest is history. I started in 2008.
What makes me passionate about my career: A college professor once said to me, “People don’t leave buildings, people leave people.” That statement sunk very deep with me. What has made me passionate about my career choice has been my amazing co-workers and the unique situations we’ve faced together. My fire family and what we do and stand for mean everything to me.
My advice for the younger generation: Be proud of yourself for every step you take. Don’t measure yourself too harshly. Be grateful for failures as much as successes. Stay driven and never grow fear to keep trying.
In my spare time: I love to paint and feel holding a paintbrush is very therapeutic and rewarding. When asked to paint something for someone, it’s an honor. To me, paint is somewhat magical and provides more than just a color change. Paint can shift a mood, express a feeling and bring an emotional connection to a space. There is no better feeling than making someone smile by helping them achieve their vision.
After 40, I see myself: Living this life every day to the fullest. I don’t spend too much time thinking into the future. Life is so unpredictable. I hope to continue what I do in the present. Every day provides a new set of opportunities to build on. I don’t know what my future holds, but I am hopeful it will be beautiful and perhaps something I haven’t dreamt of yet.
Robin Smithgall, 39 (right)
Company/Job Title: Marion County Fire Rescue, Division Chief
How I got into firefighting: I’d originally planned to pursue nursing. Once I finished my prerequisites, I was put on a two-year waiting list to get into the program, so my twin sister and I decided to go to fire school. We started work with separate agencies on Oct. 1, 2008.
My greatest professional accomplishment: Being in the position I am now overseeing health and safety. It allows for opportunities to champion our agency’s mental health and wellness. There have been too many line of duty deaths related to suicide and cancer. I love being able to collaborate with other agencies on this movement to break the stigma—be BRAVE and ask for help. It’s ok not to be ok.
My advice for the younger generation: Get the word “can’t” out of your vocabulary, and always have a sense of humor! It sounds cliché, but you have to be mindful of your thoughts and the power of a positive attitude. Focus on quality relationships, do things wholeheartedly. Find a balance in life, and don’t sacrifice your family for your career. Keep God first and the rest will fall into place.
In my spare time: Spending time with family is my absolute favorite! I also love painting my wagon, making signs, decorating our house for the holidays, making jellies and jams, antiquing with my husband and finding “rusty treasures.”
After 40: “The Best is Yet to Come.” I want to leave it better than I found it, as Mom would say. I hope to make a difference in the fire service personally and professionally. My ultimate goal is to be in the mountains with my sugar whiskers (husband Ken) watching fireflies glow, and listening to the creek run.
Matt Wheatley, 35
Company/Job Title: Wheatley Realty, Broker/Realtor
Job responsibilities: Managing a boutique real estate brokerage and its agents, also actively assisting buyers and sellers.
How I got into my career: My family was in real estate at one time, then I went into it in 2013.
What makes me passionate about my career: Helping people, educating them, and showing them that homeownership/building wealth with real estate is possible.
Greatest achievements in life: Professionally, selling over $20,000,000 in real estate annually. Personally, marrying my soulmate and raising two beautiful children together.
My advice for the younger generation: There are so many things! Failure is necessary to succeed, you are the creator of your own life, and great things take time. Consistency will beat motivation, and your mindset is everything. If there could only be one thing, it would be to remember that what you think dictates how you feel, how you feel dictates your actions, and in turn, your actions create your outcomes in life. If you are stuck and feel like you need to change, don’t change your actions, change your thoughts. Start by asking yourself why you feel this way.
In my spare time: I enjoy going to the gym, golfing, and family time.
Life after 40: Continuing to build, inspire and create the change I want to see in this world.
Sarah Sellers, 31
Career: Family Nurse Practitioner/APRN
Job responsibilities: Responsibilities include taking care of patients of all ages. We see patients as young as 9 and as old as 99! I manage lab results, medications, radiology, mental health, women’s health, as well as acute and chronic disease.
My greatest professional accomplishment: I think being considered for ‘40 Under 40,’ especially because I have only been in practice for about two years!
Advice to the younger generation: I think COVID helped us to understand how important it is to have an ‘essential career.’ Aside from truly being happy with the career you have chosen, I feel that a job serving others will never go out of style. I would advise the younger generation to ask themselves, “How can I use my talents and knowledge to help others?”
In my spare time: My husband and I love spending time outdoors. In our spare time–which seems hard to come by with two little ones–we take our children exploring, fishing, hunting, or showing them new places around Florida. We want to show our children how important it is to appreciate this land where we were both born and raised. On weekends, you can always find us riding around on our side-by-side or hanging out on the lake.
